I need to put a new engine in my series 2a. Would a upgraded engine like a 200tdi be any good? Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends really on what you want AND use the landy for ....

Low mileage not doing much more than pottering about ...not much nicer than a well sorted 2 1/4 petrol ....

More miles and towing then a TDi makes sense ....late 30's to the gallon ...what's not to like ...yes a tad noisier than a petrol BUT with a bit of thought they CAN be made civilised .

Between me and the Mrs we've 5 series between us ...

88 sIII with 2.5 Transit power
88 sII with Tdi and LT77 5 speed (on standard fron axle and NO it's not made the sky fall down and killed us all NOT running a stage 1 axle)
2 x Standard 109 FFR SIII's
And a SIIa 109 Station wagon with a 19J Diesel turbo ....

Station wagon will be going TDi and lt77 soon ....
makes for a fantastic drive AND being permanent four wheel drive VERY sure footed.

I personally wouldn't ditch the turbo though.... it's a tad "Numb" without :D

That's given me some good pointers. I've seen a transit engine on e bay with all the stuff it needs for conversion. I might go with that.

Not a bad engine (Buckets of torque) not fast AND bloody noisy to be honest AND needs the adaptor plate etc .

More power/economy really makes the Tdi the most sensible option in a series ...fits with the minimum of chopping AND is pretty well documented .
