we have a 90 with a 200 tdi discovery engine in and its vibrating quite bad on tickover this travels through the whole body. What could be the problem??
Note its just had new rings, shells , turbo and valve re-grind weve also checked the crank pulley and that seems in good order.

Number One cause is ENGINE MOUNTINGS (including the gearbox mounts).

Number two cause is that the tickover is TOO SLOW, even just a little, and the dynamic balancing isn't happening fast enough to operate - so it shakes. Speed up tickover to the correct speed, and see what happens.

Did you take the flywheel off the crank?
Did you fit a new clutch?

Are you SURE you re-fitted the pistons the right way round? It is CRITICAL that this is correct, as the gudgeon pins are usually off-set to the thrust side.

Let me know ....

pistons definetly correct just had new mounts flywheel wasnt removed, tried speeding up tickover still the same. Note that this vibration was the same before the rebuild!!

i just put a disco 200tdi in my 90, and i had to remove the flywheel housing off the old TD and put it on the 200tdi so the bellhousin bolts match up.

how did u do it?

How you got round the exhaust?? used a defender 200 tdi and modified the down pipe is what we did!

i bought a ready made downpipe from steve parker land rovers. was £105+VAT but saved a lot of time!

i also bought the intercooler/radiator pipework kit from steve parker which was bout £140, but once again made life so much easier cos it just bolted together, made a much neater job than if id made up the pipework as well.

Oh well, you've gotten me stumped then.
It is probably going to be something silly like an engine mounting loose on the block, or a chassis bracket cracked and ready to drop.

If the timing is way too far advanced it might vibrate a bit on tickover
but it would make a Hell of a diesel clatter when driving. Something is LOOSE somewhere ..... so check all the nuts and bolts of all the joints between the engine and the propshafts, and also check that it IS actually vibrating!

If some part of the engine / transmission / exhaust is leaning on the chassis or bodywork somewhere it shouldn't, then ordinary engine wobbliness that would normally be quiet will be transformed into a disastrous noise.

When you identify the problem, let us all know!

Aye, check your eggzorst, I have a nasty rattle on my 90 at the moment, it looks and sits perfectly when the engine is off, then turn it on and it rattles and shakes the whole thing, go out and put your foot on the zorst real hard/give it a boot and see if it stops, or get under it and move the zorst about until it stops rattling.

From experience it rattles off the gearbox cross member if you've put it too high, or if the little strengthening bar on the old round ones. Could also be knocking off the handbrake drum.

Thanks for your sugeestions i will remove the whole exaust of all of its mounts and hang them on tie-raps to see if the vibrasion continues.
Again many thanks
