engine temp

Think i might have a problem with my engine temp sensor, the needle on the temp gauge stays at the bottom and only rises to the second bottom mark it goes nowhere near the middle were its supposed to be, i'm thinking (hoping) its the temp sensor itself or thermostat, the heater in the cab works fine, any help would be great cheers its a 95 disco 300tdi if that helps anyone, don't want to blow it up after only 2 weeks took long enough to convince the wife to let me get one

I would start with a new stat first about 3 quid.
Read up how to bleed the coolant system befoe you do any work on it
300 models pretty fussy coolant wise, google p gasket, split header tank, basically ignore any coolant issues at your wallets peril!

Think ive got this one sorted finally, got a new stat and sender fitted stat no problem came to the sender and TMS had given me the wrong one it was alot bigger and had a 2 blade plug on on it should of checked before i left, filled it back up with coolant bled it fired her up no diferent gauge still wasn't moving so tried earthing the wire on the sender gauge went up in to the red and then started going from the bottom to half way erratically so plugged it back in and set of to go and change the sendor and about a mile down the road gauge started to rise up to the middle and stayed there took it for a good run and the gauge never moved from the middle, still think i'll change the sendor though have to wait until next weekend now as TMS was closed by the time i got there, let her cool down checked coolant level everything spot on hope this helps anyone with a similar problem, this site is awsome for advice thanks people

I have a similar problem.
Gauge doesn't read anything and I swopped out the sensor and sender but still nothing,
that's one of the problems of buying blind and my biggest failing "trust"..learning the hard way...still!

A more accurate gauge with overheat warning is a TM2 watch dog,easy to fit,combine it with a low coolant alarm and end up with some confidence in the 300tdi cooling system.

Well to-day I checked the connector against the bulkhead earthing it and the needle moved slightly,so stripped it back and removed the slide on connector , replacing it with an electrical snap on connector and it now reads faultlessly.
The fault lay in the flaky connector that slips over the temp sender, you might want to check the wire and see if this helps steady the reading.
