Finally getting the idea that my 2.5TD is at the end of its life :(, and that a 200tdi is the way to go

So i guess there are quite a few people who have done this job?

I have removed quite a few engines (usualy small petrol ones), but wanted some guidance on the best way of doing it.

1) Can the engine come out without the gear ox?

2) What is the timescale here - weekend or bank holiday? or longer? (presumeing that some astard bolt somewhere will take me 5 hours to get out)

3) What if any are the major pitfalls?

4) What is a reasonable price for a second hand 200tdi unit at present - i know there are fully rebuilt ones on ebay of £995 but i guess these are strong bits of kit that last (unlike the 2.5TD)

Remove tunnel housing from cab, and you can get at all the bellhousing bolts to disconnect the gearbox from the engine.take Bonnet Rad and slam panel off and the whole lot comes out **** easy. It took me with an engine hoist 3hrs to take a TD engine out of a 90.

Do a search this is the most carried out mod and there are hundreds of threads on how to do it.

I've just fitted a replacement 200tdi into my defender. It was a real nice ex disco unit with less than 60k done and cost me £350. It didn't take too much ebay patience to find it plus it had the disco turbo which i didn't need.

You will want to split the engine from the gearbox at the bell housing.

All in, it took me 2 hrs to remove the old lump which included removing the winch bumper and front panel, rad etc. There's not that much to it once you get stuck in.

Oh yes and I'm an old(ish) git as well.

Thanks

One other thing there is a big sticker saying - "Warning Contains Asbestos" stuck on the top of my radiator/fan cover - is this somebody's joke or somethink i should watch out for?
