Guys (and girls)

My 2 1/4 petrol is running extremely well at the moment. Starts first turn of the key, tick over is lovely and pulls well throughout the whole range and she'll even go to 70! However, sometimes when I switch her off the engine runs on for a bit. What causes this and how do I cure this problem? Also is it indicative of any other problems that may be round the corner?

Cheers

Dave

bloody hell yella you're sharp tonight. The timing was out but I (think?) that I sorted it out last week, it was also running rich, would this affect it? I've got a full service kit arriving tomorrow from Padocks so I'll do the timing again this week. Once the timing etc is sorted out will it take a bit of time to stop doing it?

Cheers

Idling speed too high? incorrect thermostat fitted / radiator blocked up(running too warm?)

timing out or overheating, will give similar results.
also check the plugs. deposits of carbon can glow red hot and keep firing the engine.

I'll check the plugs etc out this weekend.

It doesn't seem to run hot. The temp needle sits near the top of the N on the gauge and never moves. It was running on before the timing was adjusted. Although I am going to check it again this weekend.

Cheers for the replies so far.

as yer man says lumps of carbon can glow and cause a deeesiling effect. this can be cured by bunging some brake fluid down the carb while holding the throttle open a bit (about 3500rpm) oh and do this out the way some place things get a bit smokey for a while but once done the inside of yer head will be nice and clean.

yup you just pour that stuff in. i've no idea how much you really have to use cos i used to just bung a tin full down . fooking smoke is unreal but it does the job that otherwise would need the head removed.
