Hi all I am looking for a garage/machine shop that would undertake the restoration of my series 3 Diesel engine. I have been misled in the past and ended up with time wasters. I am willing to travel in Wiltshire, Berkshire Hampshire and West Sussex. I hope someone will be brave enough to lead me to a dependable option. Thanks

I assume you are not interested in diy? It has to be one of the most simple engine to rebuild yourself to learn on as a beginer

I looked for months in the NW and only found one with a 12 month waiting list. Most won’t touch Land Rover engines let alone a vintage diesel.
Ended up having to do it myself. Not hard but a faff when I had other things to be getting on with.

Thanks for the information, I will have to try to find a friendly garage. I could have a go myself, but then I could be left with a pile of bits and no hope of completion. I suppose getting a swap engine may be an answer, but would it be as bad as the one I have?

Well a bit of thinking needed. Thanks again for giving me your thoughts.

Safari Engineering might be able to help you out. They did a good job reconditioning my 2a's gearbox.

I paid £240 + vat for 20thou rebore and about £90 for MAHLE pistons off eBay + all the other bits, there’s enough guidance online and in manual to easily strip and put back together
once It’s rebored that’s pretty much the hard bit over , good to have an engine stand
but the cost of it could get a 200tdi and just fit as a di uses same rad and exhaust and engine mountings

I got a mobile reborer to do it on my garage floor. He mostly does plant and tractors due to transport costs but as he comes to you, you can discuss your options live.
Made a cracking job anorl.

It'll be pricey, but Turner Engineering are the only people I'd trust. (You only need to see their workshop to know that you'd be in good hands).

I do my own, but buy bits from them knowing that the quality is decent.

I got all the bits from Turners. Sept the crank. I was going to have the original refurbed but it says not to for the diesel.
It proved to me you don’t need a lab to rebore a block. The machinery clamps to the block no matter where it is and the chap I used uses the same gear everyone else does. He said he used to chase five a day 30 years ago but now in his 60s he’s happy with five a week.
Most of the process is automatic until he got the mahoosive drilly thing out to hone the finish. Size of a ruddy road drill it was. Poor old sod.

Lol. I will keep him in mind if, hahaha, I need the 200tdi doing. If , who am I kidding, I bet its got bore big enough to get a bus down!
