Hi Chaps,

First off...I've never had oil on my hands never mind replaced parts in a car. I have however, wanted to own a Defender 90 since day dot. I have found one which looks ideal except the only downside seems to be that it has had the engine replaced in it. Should I be wary? Is there anything specific I should be looking for? It's 11 years old and engine has done 50k miles and car itself 45k.

It is for sale by a garage that pretty much only sells Defenders (though not an official dealership). It'll cost me £10k so I don't want to run the risk of this goings belly up on me and I wouldn't know how to tinker with it if anything does happen!

Any thoughts or pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've not had any dealings with them before so having to take a punt once I drive up to look at it.

Would you do business on this 90 though?
 
Lix Toll I know - have never dealt with them (they're about an hour drive from me) but I've passed them and stopped there many times, and they've been around ages.

Looks clean, but obviously you need a good check on the chassis.

Like Grimmer £10k feels on the high side, especially for one that does not appear to have any sexy mods or add ons. Landys are hard to value, but I'd have guessed at £7.5k - £8.5k tops.

Would be interested in their explanation for the new engine - if the chassis has only done 45k, am surprised the engine needed swapping out - and that's assuming it was swapped 'like for like'.

Foreman had said the original 'blew a cam rod'. It's all Greek to me so may not merit a full engine replacement but that was his explanation!

I've been struggling to source a decent priced 90 station wagon for a few weeks now. I'm not keen to travel the length of the country so fairly limited with what Autotrader, and google can find me nearby. Feel free to suggest alternative routes to try if you know any.
 
To be honest sourcing a good one takes time, you'll look at several and fall in love with one.

Autotrader, Pistonheads etc. are all fine - just be on the look out for stolen/ringers. Do the proper vehicle checks, and if you're unsure about what you're looking for, take a chum or find and existing Landy owner that can help you know what to look for.

I found mine off Autotrader, but it took a while!

Certainly worth a visit, and a lovely pub just 2 miles from Lix Toll at the Falls! I'd just be looking to do a deal at somewhat less than £10k, but as ever it's about what you're willing to pay.
