Engine rattle

Hi guys, may sound like a daft question without seeing or hearing it. But I have a pretty loud engine rattle that only develops when the engine is warmed up, sounds a bit top end. Any ideas of such a rattle that only appears when engine is warmed up? Frorgot to say, its a 4.6 HSE

Cam lobes worn? Sticky hydraulic lifter? Oil too thin / old?

If it's when warm I would assume it's oil related.

almost due for an oil/filter change, so will try that first,

these are classic v8 problems as well as the tappets

I've been quite fortunate with mine so far. 124k miles and always had fully synthetic oil in it (although some people say it shouldn't have).

I started getting a slightly ticky lifter but I have the agency for Lubeguard oil additives and stuck some engine additive in. Thankfully within 100 miles it quietened down again and I rarely get the rattle on start up due to oil drain from the lifters.

I am thinking maybe next time I change the oil I'll try some 10w40 fully synthetic oil as a lot of people say the 5w40 is too thin for the V8.

The Rover V8's design dates from the early sixties(!) so modern thin oils are not really suited to it. Many owners do use synthetics (full or semi) & swear by that application, personally I've always used a decent quality mineral oil of 15/40 or even 20/50 if the engine has covered a high mileage. Hopefully your problem is indeed a rattle (which I've never experienced, so can't help with) & not a tapping sound which, if it appears only when warm/hot, could be a liner moving.
