Is it a relatively easy job to change seal. also I aint got a clue if the compression figures are good or bad, any ideas ?

Those compression figures are not too bad for an old engine. My crank seal leaks but I don't worry about, I just keep an eye on the level.

Thinking long and hard but just not sure what to offer him. Don't want to insult the Man as he seems very nice and has been honest with me. but then again don't want to pay more then its worth.

The trouble is, there's not many others for sale to compare prices. A reconditioned one will be at least £1500. My rule of thumb when buying second-hand stuff over £250 is to make an offer of 20% less than the asking price. If you offer £600 he will probably come back with a counter offer, what have you got to lose.

Do you think its worth the 800 he is asking.? theres a few more for sale but none that shows them actually running.

I think its worth more than that. I would have bought it by now.

Not that long ago, last year, the Army were flogging off a load of reconditioned 3.5l v8 engines for about £1200 each if I remember correctly. So £800 seems a lot to me but it depends on how much you want it. You might find one much cheaper but an unknown quantity that ends up costing a lot more. Everything second-hand is a risk.

I like the fact it has an SU fitted so to me that makes it worth a bit more.The video proves it runs and compression figures seem reasonable. I have seen engines being sold around £200 to £300 but you are taking a chance as you have to trust the seller that they run. The seller does seem to be quite honest in pointing out the bolt in the thermostat housing.
The fact it comes with all the starter motor and alternator as well adds to its value, perhaps £800 is a bit high but If you take into account the SU and manifold which would probably cost you £150-£200 it doesn`t seem to that far from being a good buy.
It still is a gamble so all I can add is good luck.

With the engine out do the crank seal, not so much a hard job but a bit of a fiddle. Should you decide to replace come back for more info.

I think you should make the guy an offer today or you risk losing it. If you thinks it's too much money, walk away and don't think of it again, life is too short for regrets.

Made offer's up to 550 but eBay won't allow any more than 3 offer's for some reason. Will have to message him with another.

Well No good, he says he has had another 2 offers one at 750 and one 800, but was complaining that buyers wanted him to strap it on a pallet.
So I offered him 700 and told him I would go and pick it up but he refused so cant do much better then that.
So its back to plan B for me now. Thats when I think of a plan B
