Hi i had a new engine put in my 4.6 rangie last year with fully synthetic oil but now the garage where i take it is going to put in castrol 5w 30 semi synthetic in
he says its ok ?? any thoughts on it.

Have a look in your service book and see what it recommends.

RAVE sys it should take 5-30W up to 10-60W for our sort of climate. Unless you think it is going to drop below -20C this winter then 10-40W should do the trick. Doesn't mention service intervals though.

I think the main advantage of synthetic is longer service intervals. As long as you change the oil regularly (and it is easy enough to do so that shouldn't stop you) then semi-synthetic should be good for 6-10k miles.

Fully synthetic is for the extended oil changes now popular with manufacturers. If you are not doing extended changes is a waste of money. Semi synthetic will be fine. After all it is the recommended oil for your engine.
