Hi all :) Can anybody tell me if the engine drain plug used on standard fitment Land Rover engines is the same size for all vehicles? I have asked this on another forum but only got told that as the drain plug is not a service item why should I want to renew it... Well, I want to renew it because, for one I'm doing an oil change and I do need to replace the washer, which should be normal practise. Secondly, though I haven't looked yet, the drain plug is likely to be 40yrs old (I have a series 2a) and quite possibly the corners are going to be rounded off to a greater or lesser degree. My local motor parts shop only has one single listing for both the plug and the washer which simp[ly states Land Rover. Not much help there.

Any ideas?

Not looking is a little bit lazy. Get yourself underneath & measure.

It's not that I'm lazy but that I happen to have arthritis. I can get down there but I may not get back up :) Measuring is no good as there is only a picture in a catalogue to go by at the parts shop :(

I may end up taking it out, draining the oil - obviously - then taking the lot to the shop and comparing it that way. At least it will give all those drips of oil chance to work there way out of the engine... yes, I have another vehicle by the way ;)

Ok, Fair point & you have my apologies, but it won't be any easier for you to change the oil. What about a friendly local independent garage who could then sort out a replacement if there was a problem with your plug & wouldn't charge the earth.

Ah, no need for an apology, I didn't take offence :) I agree with you that it would be 'easier' to get a local garage to do the oil changes. In fact, I am on good terms with a very good little independent place (Fast Fit Freddy's, Hawks Green Cannock if anybody is nearby) who I get to do the bigger jobs on my Astra. On the Landy though I like to try to do as much as I can myself. I had to retire early back at the end of the year 2000 (I'm only 45 now) due to this arthritis. I have good days and very bad ones but on the good ones it gives me something to occupy my mind.

Anyway, I popped into Craddock's yesterday morning and picked up a drain plug and washer. 79 pence... nice :) about half the price of the Astra set.

Take care all.

hi i could do with a washer for drain plug what are they made of copper, fibre, rubber ect

This one is copper. Not just flat copper of course, it's like a raised copper section intended to crush down and seal against the two pieces of steel (sump plug and sump itself). I don't think I've ever seen a rubber sump plug washer. I think I recall seeing a fibre one once but it's a long time ago. I've got a feeling most are made of copper nowadays. My son's Golf and my own Astra are both copper washers.

Still haven't done the engine oil change yet... pain stopped play..
