hey guys dont know if ive put this thread in the right place im new to this site

i wonder if anyone can help

i have a freelander 1.8 s 3 door
basically when i am stood still or idling/warming up to temp
there is a knocking sound of some sort,
it isnt there when i first start the car only when it gets warm
and you cannot hear it while driving. It has been converted to a 2wd probaly to save the engine i can deal with that but im starting to think the bottom end is going all power is still there.
the idle needle bobs a little when stood still
oil on the dipstick is normal
im doing a service on the car on tuesday to see if that helps, the car has done 76000 miles.
anyone had this problem or knows anything about it?
cheers guys

sorry about the spelling and sentance structure im a northerner cheers

Eee by gum!, its glum up north :)

I would give it a service (as you are arranging) using a good oil and see how your noise is then. As a rule, the bottom end is pretty tough on the K-series, so doubt its that, especially if someone has even remotely changed the oil now and then. At 76K its just a youngster really.

Check the exhaust condition etc as well. You can get all sorts of knocks and clanks if worn mountings etc.

haha havent heard that in a while :)

cheers for the reply
what oil do you recommend is best? its the first freelander i have owned.
The exhaust is pretty rusty i bought it from a farmer, it was just a work horse i reckon
can the spark plugs come loose?
what kind of things do i need to look out for?
cheers sorry about lack of knowledge about these engines,
ive always had gti-6 ect, im 22 just and thought it be time to get a reasonable car/toy haha
cheers guys

The MG boys all recommend Castrol Magnetec 10W40 in a K series, especially for a noisy engine. If it was owned by a farmer then I'd not drive it until it has had a full service with new oil, filters etc, as they are notorious for waiting until things break before fixing them. To all the farmers I know routine maintenance is a foreign concept.
Then unless you have receipts to confirm already done, go for new timing belt, water pump and tensioner. They are all due at your mileage.
Then check the VCU with the one wheel up test, at your mileage it is probably past its best.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Freelanders. :)

edit Eurocarparts are selling Castrol Magnetec for under £20 for 4 litres. Unfortunately you need just over 4L for an oil change.

the spark plugs can come loose if they are not tightened properly I would change them as well do a full service , the spark plugs recommended for that engine are platinum ,o no is that not reet.LOL

no worries i will do that on tuesday then cheers

what is the one wheel up test?
welcome to life of owning a freelander haha i have gathered with what i have been reading :)
if the service does not sort it out i have been thinking about changing the engine bearings and things like that
would a haynes manual be helpful?
cause ill just have a go at doing it myself i have a goodish know-ledge of engines so i thought why not if i carnt i carnt but if i could bonus?

cause while i do it i can change timing belt e.c.t

cheers

what is the one wheel up test? The easiest way to explain that is to do a YouTube search and watch it - It gives an indication as to the condition of the VCU

if the service does not sort it out i have been thinking about changing the engine bearings and things like that Likely as not that probably won't be necessary. If the main bearing were worn the oil pressure light would blink on dimly? when the engine is warm and at idle speed
would a haynes manual be helpful? Yes

There is a lower engine stabiliser bar. It's on the driver's side behind the sump. It has a rubber bush in it and that can fail. Not a big job and not to expensive.
Knocking could also be a flogged out UV joint on the prop shaft assembly. Can also be the diff mounts - but you'd hear that from the rear end.
If the idle speed is a bit erratic squirt some carb' cleaner or WD40 into the IVAC valve. Pull the 'S' shaped hose off between the cam cover and the throttle body, that valve is right in front of the cam cover [between that and the inlet manifold]. Give it a good squirt and put hose back on.

Yes, cam belt, tensioner and water pump should be replaced, fresh [new] coolant [OAT technology], oil filter I use castrol magnatec 10W40 in mine, air filter too, spark plugs, also check / replace PAS belt and Alternator belt too.

My 2005 sounds "knocky" almost like a diesel - found the exhaust manifold loose and needing a new gasket , loose plugs can give the same .

Wouldn't rush into changing bearings .

Yes mine sounds like a diesel its just worrying me thats all because i have to drive to leeds in tomorrow dont know wether it is worth driving there or not i have changed oil, plugs, filters ect and it is still doing it
You can hear the knocking a lot more in the cab that you can outside

You guys reckon just driving it and risk it for a biscuit?

Managed to get another engine for it the joys cheers for your help guy's much appreciated

that's great glad you found out what it was , there is no need to do a one wheel up test as you said it is now two wheel drive also the petrol's do not have problems with the crank pulley that is down to the td4's
