Hi all
after 5 years away form owning a Landie i am planning on buying a Defender 90 early next year. i have owned 3 in the past inculding 2 TD5s
and a TDi (the TDi i brought first when i didn't really know anything about Land Rovers so i have no idea what engie etc was on it).
i was wondering if anyone could advise the best choice between a 200TDi and a 300TDi. i have done some research but there is no substitue for experiance.
thanks in advance

After driving both a 200 and 300, I would say the 300Tdi is slightly more refined than the 200Tdi. But they are both great engines and get very good MPG, especially if the 300Tdi has had the EGR removed.

It's not just the engine though, 300's have a better gearbox, diffs and axles, the 200 engine is known for being a more reliable engine however although a lot of it is just opinions...

Good point Jon, if you really want to simplify it, I'd have a 300Tdi just for the better position of reverse gear on the R380 gearbox.

Nice one guys exactly what i wanted to know. my plan is to try and get hold of one the has a decent chassie and a runnable engine. i am not worried about the body work and interior as i plan to add my touch to those as a project. then i can upgrade / replace engine and running gear as and when.

thanks Disco, i was thinking about slotting several Disc and Range Rover parts on to it. a lot will depend on what working etc when i get it. i had read several articles where transfere boxes have been swapped over. is it a fairly straight forward job?

I would not be to fussed at either, just get the best you can find for budget, a good 200tdi is going to be better than a worn out 300tdi
