I have a Land Rover TD and wanting to upgrade the engine.
What engine would people put in the own build? ie 200tdi 300tdi or Td5?
And reasons why you would pick that engine?

Thank you for your time
Adam

I didn't, but if I did, probably a 2.5 petrol, or a V8.

I suggest you try forum search, this has been discussed a lot.

So you already have a land rover with a TD engine & you want to upgrade to a Td engine ??? eh ??

Edit (was a very hard day lol)

Ive done 3 X 300tdi's recently............... engines & parts ready available
have you seen the price of 200tdi's now ffs
td5's are great with plenty power easily mappable but have all the elecy sensors & problems
for me v8 is out the window as we are quite rural but it would be my engine of choice :D;)

None of the above.

BMW M57 3ltr straight 6 with the 6 speed manual box out of the bimmer and remote coupled to the LT230 will give you a far better engine than anything you have suggested.

Failing that, 4.6 top hatted V8 with ported and polished heads and gasket matched intakes, running MegaSquirt3 for injection and spark, dual fuel petrol/multipoint injection LPG and the MS3 running 2 maps for both fuel and spark.

Well I always have liked the 200tdi.
Its simple but also bomb proof, has no electronic crap and if looked after will go on forever.
Its agricultural sound and performance is part of its charm.

200tdi will be a straight swap for the TD

300tdi is more work, engine mount needs moving

Td5 - no idea, but lots of electrics to fit extra

V8 - yum yum - not sure on work involved tho

2.5petrol - not sure on work involved - Swiss pocket watch of an engine though, lovely.

Thank you for your reply’s.
I’m the work in converting isn’t the problem as I was going to put a Cummins 5.9 into up but need it to be abit more useable. I like the 200tdi my self from having them in the passed but they are noisy.

Old Discovery 1s are getting short supply now, but were a good source of 200 and 300

TD5 is brilliant but needs SOME electronics, and will most likely need Defender ECU as the Discovery 2 one is paired to the BCU.

I'd be really tempted by the 2.5 petrol with some mild work (cam ect) as it is under appreciated.

V8s are nice if not clapped out.

6BT is a brute of an engine and as usable as any of the others, a good conversion would give you quite q unique vehicle.

You could always look at the BMW M52 2.8 petrol, 6 cylinders of loveliness :D

There are a few threads on the net fitting them and they quote all the parts needed too.

What do you mean usable??????????? that is 1 hell of a motor, and can be tuned to 400-500HP. More than enough to make any landrover drive scream for mercy

Noisy? I waaaaay prefer the sound of my 200 to my bag of spanners sounding TD5!
