Hi all,

Im doing my MOT repairs on my defender, one of the problems is that my fog light is fooked, ive replaced the unit, fuse, switch, bulb but still nothing... i was wondering if i could take power from the tail lights but still turn the switch on/off with the fog light switch on the dash?

Thanks Robert

Hold on, start at the beginning.

Do you have a live at the switch?

Does the live arrive at the light?

Is the light earth ok?

Not difficult just a pain in the arse......

U got power at the rear light? If so then try it again using the earth if you didnt already, you may have a break in the wire somewhere.

cheers...ive only ever seen it work once, had it for 2 years and the weekend afteri bought it i checked the lights, went for a drive and it was fooked

my m8 had the same problem on his 110, and he'd done all that you have done, but when we had a look it turned out to be a broken wire. All we did was to find the break and replace the wire, hope it helps

Just to cover bases, the fog lamp only works if ign is on and the headlights are on.

Assuming these are on, and you've switched the fogs on themselves, does the little dash light come on? (I'm not sure if this is what you mean with your comment about the screwed up little dash light).

If it does, this dash lamp is directly connected to the fog lamp itself via a red/yellow wire. Unscrew the panel that covers the wires at the back on the drivers side. Find the red with yellow trace wire and test this for 12v. If that's good, check the same on the other side behind the opposite panel.

yeah, the light comes on in the dash, do you mean removing this panel to get at the wires

what is the other panel..im guessing its the panel with the 3 switches?

No, no, no. In the back. :)

The panels on either side of the rear wheel arches that cover the wires going to the lights themselves.

The red/yellow wire from the dash light goes out through the bulkhead into the engine bay, through one of the three connectors next to the transmission tunnel and through the chassis all the way to the back of the Landy to the rear. It then re-enters the load area through a small hole behind the rear panel on the drivers side, then back out, accross the rear cross member and in through a hole on the passenger side. Its wired to both sides because different countries might have the fog light on different sides.

ah, i see, will get stuck in tomorrow...thanks mate for clearing that up, i usually just stick to the mechanicals, i stick to the basic electrics, they just confuse the hell out of me
