Electrical Problems

Hi All,

I have defender 90 td5 2002. Since I've owned it, not long 6 months or so I have been experiencing electrical problems. I first noticed it when driving at night. When I put my lights on the temperature gauge rises !..

Now I've noticed other issues. When the lights are on and I open/close a window the lights dim. Also if my radio is on and i flash my lights the radio cuts The temperature gauge also rises more when i put my heater on and the gauge will slightly flick in time with an indicator if i have on...

Its like I have shorts everywhere ... Not sure where to even begin to sort this issue ? Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Could it be an earthing problem, just been reading some other threads and some of them have similarities. However i'm not sure where the earth cable connects on a defender?

Hi it makes no difference how many times you search you will still have to check all earth cables from battery to chassis to engine !!! They are good at falling off !! If you have no mechanical skills then why not get someone who has ??
Normally a mechanic or auto electrician!!

Hi ferret boy, good points, would love to get someone to look but i know it wont be cheap , also i'd like to learn. Could you point me the direction of a source that might tell me where all the earthing points are? thanks bm

Follow the -ive (big black cable) from the battery and see where it is attached to the engine block or chassis.

At that point you should have another one, which could be a braided strap connecting the block to the chassis or from the chassis to the block, depending on how it's been put together.

From the main strap point you should also have a strap to the bulkhead.

From that point on, there are zillions of bits of black wire providing local earths around your Landy.

Get yourself a multimeter and that will help you to trace what goes where

That's great I will have a look hopefully sometime this week when its not raining. Thanks for that info, much appreciated!
