Electrical problem - suddenly lost speedo, fuel, indicators.

Hi there,

I have a 1999 110 Defender TD5 station wagon. I drove it up a hill last night and all was well. Took the dog for a walk and then on the way back down the hill, I realised I had no speedo, fuel or temp indicators and the indicators weren't working. The instrument panel lights to illuminate all these dials are fine, it's just that they are all stuck as if the engine was switched off.

The horn still works, as do the headlights and hazards and it still drives fine - it doesn't seem obvious to me which fuse I should be checking.

Any ideas of where I should start, please?

It's a little difficult to drive it without indicators!

They all share the same fuse.

No3 IIRC (think its the same as the 300tdi)

It was part of the driving test when I passed in 1971..... it's quite natural to let the right arm breath in warm weather

Thanks guys, especially for the reminder of the hand signals! Will have a go at the fuses tonight and see if it helps.

Check your indicators to make sure they are not full of rain water. I had a re-occurring problem like this once which turned out to be that.

You have to have some rain water else the garden will die!

I think Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in a similar way

Could be a ground issue. Had a similar problem, with respect to signals, when I took delivery of mine. Turned out, the lazy bugger cut a ground on the rear harness.

Also, my fuel and speedo weren't working. The fuel gauge is wired through the speedo, from the pump. Speedo was bad... After replacement, all was right again.

Love those land rover design engineers.

There's a ground header next to the overflow tank under the bonnet. Maybe check that one first.

My fuse blew on mine while driving down a very steep hill near castleton. Being a 1992, i didnt lose the speedo, I did lose fuel gauge, temp, indicators plus i didnt know what else I had lost. i.e. brake lights. Was happy when it turned out to be a simple fuse.
