electric fan questions

i remember seeing a thread/post about using an electric fan from a ford fiesta to replace the viscous unit on a 200tdi, i tried a search but couldn't find it again, i got one from a scrapyard but it looks too small compared to the original, (it was only 3 quid, so nothing lost if it's no good ) can anyone tell me if this will be ok, how do i wire it to the engine? and how do i test it to make sure it works?
 
I have a pair of 'pusher' fans ( sit infront of rad rather than behind) off a Rover 220 GTi Turbo that I would like to fit so I can get rid of the viscous fan.
I have the original frame for the twin fans & shall be looking into it one dry day!

I fitted 2 fans from a laguna diesel motor that had been rolled a few times. The fans were mounted side by side in an all in one plastic moulding and unfortunatly was just a little too wide and caught the bottom rad hose. So I set to work with my hack saw and seperated the fans by cutting and trimming the moulding around them. I simply mounted them using those plastic pull tight things through the rad fins and round the fan housing which has worked a treat. As for wiring them up a mate of mine had a variable thermo stat with a dial on top with 20 - 110 C markning on it which has a vey thin copper tube comming out with a copper bulb on the end which I droped into the rad through the top hose before putting the hose back on. I can now set the temprature that the fans kick in buy twidling the dial. The fans had very heavy wires on them so I wired them through relays and they are connected straight to the battery. I mounted the variable stat on the end of the slam panel next to the inner wing. Magic:D
 
Yes, best set up would be to put the fans connected up to a themoswitch on the rad, then the temp gets up to about 90 odd the fans come on, the air being pushed through these rad's is plenty, my 90 had twin electrics and they only come on when its a super hot day, usually in low range (lots of engine power output but not much speed to force air through).

The viscous fan is overkill and really not needed most of the time!

A override switch in the cab would also be good, means you can have it on all the time throughout offroading etc...
 
Disco Dan, if you intend doing some geen laning with your Disco i personally would't recommend using an electric fan for reason 1/ if still running when entering water it may burn out with the amount of water it has to move. 2/ when needed after wading it may not work through "bad" electrical connection. 3/ I use my Disco for greenlaning reguarly and to have an electrical fan running for all the time that the mine is in low box (which would be required to keep the engine temp ok) would soon burn it out. 4/ the viscous fan is a good design as long as it is working correctly (disengaged when cold, driving when hot), whilst it is spinning freely it is not using any engine power and when being driven it will only be taking the equivelant power that an electric fan would be dragging from the alternator (thus taking engine power to turn under load).
 
Sounds sensible. The only reason I fitted mine was the viscous unit was damaged and it worked out cheeper using bits that were secong hand and borrowed to replace them. I have the unit set at 90 C on my V8 but I supose that will vary depending on what engine your running. The fans dont realy kick in that much even when green laning but I have a new rad, water pump, hoses and a 82 C thermostat.

Hey Stig where do you go green laning that has water deep enough to go through the radiator like that? Get the water wings out :)
 
thanks for the info, i wasn't planning on wading that deep, no snorkel fitted, i was planning some gentle greenlaning, how likely am i to come across water that deep? thats if i can find any green lanes still open around here, my disco is standard apart from removing the side steps and bull bars ( steps were rotten and i bent one the first time off roading, bull bars just rusty and tatty ) i want to get some protection for the underside before i venture too far off road again but i don't know where to start
 
M y landie has one out of a peugeot, just get down the scrap yard and have a walk round Sorry about the French bit just spit
