You'll know by the fact your engine will run! :D

If you want a really easy fix now you have cleaned it, there is a soft tube coming off the valve, you will have noticed it when cleaning, clamp this tube shut with a tie wrap, anywhere along its length is fine. this will stop the egr valve letting more rubbish back into the engine.

To answer your earlier question, yes my engine did smoke on startup, but it ticked over fine. And to repeat myself, treat yourself to some millers diesel additive.

Hope this helps

Thursday nights work. Took off egr and cleaned it with carb cleaner! Much better! Compresssed valve a few times and was very jamed! Free a little and cleaned! Spring very strong still!

Cleaned hoses, with any build up. Was more responsive on low end. Started yesterday and not even one trace of smoke on cold start!

Surprised how easy this was! How long it lasts I don't know. Went to Heathrow last night and again no hesitance.

This morning, smoke on cold start, like excess fuel but ticked over fine and went out with no black smoke or hesitance. Much more responsive.

EGR still can cause puff on cold start? I know it was very cold. Glow plugs seems fine and when on diagnostic machine from garage, no sign of injector issues.

Just concerned that after spending £600 on service in October to then face these issues and not to have the support of the garage to rectify this issue. Instead they said to driv it hard! I called this week and they admitted they did not have time! So confidence with is low and dont really want to take it back. My main concern is if they did what they said they did on the service in October! Crank case breather, fuel filter all other filters oil, air and pollen.

Hi there,

Drove the Fl today and thought I would drive it hard put my foot down! the first kick down there was a black smog behind. Then tried it three or four times and nothing. This is the first time since the EGR clean. Just hoping its ok. My only concern now is the cold start. Spoke to Diesel drivers and they agreed the first one is normal. Then nothing after that. It feels like the vehicle is over fueling. Maybe because of cold tempretures? Been -2 to-4 degrees here. Just worried if injector. Would injector give any other symptoms? GLow plus symptons?

Regards

Hi there,

When we had an injector fail on us, the engine would take a couple of turns to start and would run roughly on tick over. Normaly this gets worse until the injector fails and your freebie won't start. I know I'm banging on a bit about this but that Millers ecomax stuff I keep recomending CLEANS YOUR INJECTORS :blabla:, since i've been using it the engine purrs like a cat!
Go on give it a go its only about 12 quid.

I called the garage and cancelled the booking for tomorrow. As mentioned before, the handling of my last booking was not great. I expressed my thoughts to them as even trying to cancel the booking took three calls for me to get through to someone. I mentioned, when the vehicle was in for the faults first time, I was told there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and to drive it hard, as they put diesel conditioner in the tank. From what I gather speaking to you guys, this would not help an EGR issue would it? They did not charge me, but when speaking to them last week, I said that the vehicle was the same and that I was not happy with the vehicle. There response was that they did not have time to check everything and had 42 cars in that day. Something that I did not want hear as my vehicle was a scheduled booking. Today when I finally got through to cancel it, I told them that I was not happy and in way it was handled. I did question my £600 service in October and said were the parts actually changed for what I was charged for as based on last experience it could be the case of time! They got little defensive as I would expect and asked them again, what was done when the car was in for the faults. They apparently checked hoses/turbo hoses but did see that the EGR was very clogged up! At this time I as thinking, why not clean the gunk or change it! They also plugged it into the diagnostic machine and no faults were registered. Now if they did do this, and if injectors were faulty or glow plugs, would'nt it register on the machine? At the same time when speaking to service guy, the engineer was explaining what he did and his attitiude stank. Especially when giving him a bottle of Champagne for his efforts, based on the feed back that was given to me originally. I am a nice guy really! lol. I would of been happy for them to say nothing found and will need to spend more time to check more stuff. Insted I got, car was ok and to drive it hard just in case it caused a fault. From this I have lost faith in the garage as my experiences in the past with other garages have not been great and always cautious when my cars go in for repair or servicing.
