Hi there,

Hope you are all well. As per my other thread about cold start smoke and+black smoke. Went to the garage and they tested the vehicle and plugged into diagnotics and checked hose. All seemed ok but the outcome was egr clogged. Garage said that i dont drive enough and to keep using it and sometimes in tip mode. They did not charge me at for this. Yesterday drove 120 miles return and seems ok but at times from stand still to accelerate, at 1200 rpm bit sluggish and black smoke at back. It does this only when warm and intermitantly. Are these the sypmptoms of EGR? Asked if I it could be cleaned and said that diesel conditioner was used. I have carried on using redex at every top up. Would these cleaners eventially clean free up EGR?

Also opened the bonnet today and one of the hoses, which is like a U type hose, toward the right front of the bay, seems oily. Is this normal on a diesel that certain hoses have traces of oils build up? Its black! its directly above the round silver thing! not sure what it is.

Your help will be much apreciated! as you guys have gathered I worry too much! lol!

Hi there
That round silver thing is the EGR mate. If you know the difference between a spanner and a banana then to remove it and clean it is a 1 banana job. Simply undo the hose clips and take it off and give it a good soaking in diesel. You will be amazed how much crud there is in it. A 3 banana job is to remove the inlet manifold which will also have a lot of crud in it. Has the Pressure limiting valve been renewed on past services ? This is crucial to the Crankcase emission control. L/R now recommend that it is replaced at 12,000 intervals. This is to be found once the engine cover is removed on the right hand side of the engine near the turbo. Have a chat to your local L/R storeman about it. Fitting it is a 2 banana job.
Hope this has helped

Hi there,

Cleaned egr last week. Do you mean crank case breather? That was changed in October.

Hi there,

Purchased new EGR valve. Will fit this week. Everyone telling me to clean inlet manifolds as well. Is this easy? I had crank breather changed in October, change again? I have been told i need new seals foor the inlet manifolds. Is there DIY step by step? Part numbers for the seals? Montoring the car for the last few days, it only gets hesitant twice (before it was all the time) on a journey and smoke. Then fine.

Look forward to your reply

Changed the EGR. No smoke on first start. Drive was ok until when warm( 30 mins into drive) and slight hesitancy on pulling away from stand still. But no smoke. Got millers but any ideas? Checked air filter and seems ok

Don't waste time and effort cleaning an EGR or wast money buying a new one.
Black it off / By-pass it or whatever you want to call it - but get rid of it - the EGR valve on a TD4 works against both power and economy.

If you pcv valve is cleaned / renewed or modified with the latest BMW insert then you should be fine.

As to the oily hoses - that seems to be normal with this style of turbo / engine combo. There will always be some oil in them them!

The hoses eventually break down with time - rubber doesn't like been coated with an oily mist all the time.

Common problem is caused by not cleaning all the surfaces before replacing the hoses - there are either 2 or 3 hoses - depending if you have the sensor fitted on the long pipe. The slippery hoses tend to come off under load - especially from the 90 degree bend from the EGR to the intake manifold.

Best not to replace them with rubber though. Silicone is better and will last the lifetime of the engine. Costs a little bit more though.
