I thought I would document the work im doing on my Disco considering I have at last got to the bottom of the problem, well at least I hope I have

Whilst im doing that job I am taking the oppurtunity to change the cambelt and tensioners as well as the crank pulley and key.

So stage 1 is to gain reasonable access and guess what this hateful car is already throwing spanners in the works. I need to remove the viscous fan in order to gain access to the timing chest cover, and guess what, someone has rounded all 4 little 10mm headed bolts that hold it on! Que buying a new fan spanner as I can't find mine in the hope I can get it out of the way that way.

Stage 2 would be to remove the serpentine belt which in this case became stage 1 as I wanted to do stuff tonight! Which has showed up where the grumbling noise has been coming from so now going to be putting a new water pump on as well. :mad2:

Thats as far as I got tonight because its now dark and also because this car hates me.

You know there is a LR spec tool for holding the timing and pulley together while you remove the pump right ?:amen:

Yes all the bloody 10mm on LR s are made of dairy milk they should be 14mm
I just hammer on 7/16 if some knob has rounded it with his **** tools then replace the bolt once removed.

Just done tbelt yesterday took 2 hours start to finish here you go

Tap of with drift (left hand thread) fan nut and remove fan
Undo pulley 10mm s
Remove all belts
Socket and bar on bottom pulley lean against chassis and flick engine over to break bolt
Remove bottom pulley with crow bar be gentle
Remove top hose block up to stop coolant loss
Remove fan shroud
Remove timing case bolts keep in order quicker to put back together just start at 12 o'clock go clock wise lay em out left to right saves the kiddy style card board
Set timing
10m drill pit in pump pulley
Slacken tensioner
Slacken and remove idler and tensioner
Remove belt

Reverse to hoy it back together

Please use the above as a rough guide !!

It's can be done without them, I suppose if you haven't got it then you can only do it the way you have tools for

Chin up Paul, it doesn't hate you, it's a Land Rover. Do not forget it was designed by a communist committee and built by people who at the time couldn't give a toss. Funny really, I absolutely love mine and would not be without it even when it is naughty.

Discovery still dead. Id hoped id have it fixed tonight in time for tomorrows trailer training as I take my towing test on Monday.

She has been continuing on form and has thrown more curve balls at me. First not only is the water pump fubared so is the bearing for the fan pulley. The crankshaft damper pulley is also dead as some prat has welded it up. On the plus side the new injection pump is now installed but we are no start yet as the timing belt kit my local motor factors supplied is for a 200TDI and as such doesn't fit. Judging by the condition of the belt and pulleys I just took off (which were supposed to be new according to the advert) It would not be safe to put the old belt back on to see if she'll run.

I also spotted the camshaft was timed a tooth out which certainly won't have been helping the running issues. I do hope when the right parts arrive tomorrow I will have her working properly over the weekend.

Improvement can be seen!

Starting now on the 4th or 5th revolution of the engine when cranking when cold. Instant if you stop her and re-start straight away and back to 4 or 5 revolutions if left more than about 1 minute. That is definatly an improvement as she wouldn't start without easystart before the pump swap.

As for the other issue we are still down on power but she does seem to sound better. I can see an improvement in the performance but its still dead slow. I have taken a video so you can see how she is. Is this just the performance I can expect from a 300 auto or am I right in thinking its got no guts

vid link coming when it finishes uploading.

Not sure how slow the tdi edc auto's are-never owned one.So let someone else chime in who has experience.
My TD5 auto will beat almost anything at the traffic lights pulling away, but it is a more powerful engine and believe it has been chipped

Are you struggling to get above 2500 rpm? (Video won't load on phone)
Is it auto or manual? Does is it pull like a train up until 2500 on either flat or Hill?

If that was foot down there is definitely something not right my 300tdi auto (with EDC) is a lot quicker than that. The engine doesn't sound right, it sounds flat. Mine is sort of "bright" sounding and fairly free revving (well as much as a 4 pot diesel can be).
I am certainly not as experienced in Land Rover mechanics as most on here are but Affordable Autos in Congleton look after my car and Dan, the chief tech there, says that they adjust the pump timing until they hear it sounding "bright", like a Land Rover diesel should sound (makes sense to me :D). So maybe that could be the answer, advance pump timing a bit :tea:.

It revs up fine in neutral. I should also note the scrappy phone recording is distorting the engine sound. It sounds a lot less tinny in real life. The confirmation that performance is still down is what I needed. Although I'm at my wits end as to where to go next. I'm seriously considering scrapping the bloody thing and just throwing away the £2500 it cost to buy.
