Hi

Got a TD5 on an automatic and just had a JE Chip installed which has increased the drivability of it no end (coming off roundabouts, overtaking JCB's etc) I didnt expect it to work miracles but mpg doesnt seem to have improved.

Now before anyone says, I have driven the car exactly the same style, try to keep below 2500rpm and cruise at just under 2000rpm where I can do 50mph comfortably.

My problem seems to be in getting the auto box into fourth gear quickly enough on a warm engine even. Tried different techniques like revving slightly high in 3rd and waiting for it to click down (well below 3000rpm) or just dropping foot off accelerator once in 3rd where sometime it drops down then nicely. Its probably not going to make too much different anyway I presume if my revs never go above 3000 anyway, but I'm guessing its easier on the engine being in 4th than 3rd right??

Is there another technique to it or do I have to keep tap dancing with the foot and waiting for it to drop in?

Hi
The auto box only locks off at 50 mph when it gets it is up to temp.I have tryed all type of driving styles but I cannot get a good mpg the max mpg I have had is 25 mpg but most of the time it is about 20 mpg.

Well chucking in £30 of diesel at about 94p a litre I'm getting 160 miles out of it....not sure what that equates too. Most of my driving is on A Roads until I hit town centre but never stuck in traffic for long

I get out of a 80 litre fill up about 360miles and that is on long journeys and 2 mile to work and back, the mpg does'nt really alter even with a twin axle caravan on the back.Only once has it got 400miles on a full tank. But if you have a Asda near to you then look at there new credit card offer you get 2p a litre off if you use the credit card a good saving when filling up the disco.

Aye the wife spotted that deal.....seems good but have to be strict on paying the fuel bill at end of month!

rough maths it is about 22.8 mpg

i drive my auto with economy in mind too. never above 3000 rpm or "sport" mode. on average got 22 to 25 mpg. i also drop redex in every three months or so. with a once a month blast to the rev limiter to clean things out.

just had a full "b" service and mot done, all filters and lubes changed, emmisions less than half max.

did 430 mile trip at the weekend, cruise control at 70 and returned 28.6 mpg !!!

very pleased with that.

talking of the `sport` mode button, I have Td5 2001 plate and see no difference in performance at all with this on. As far as economy I normally get 380-400 out of a tank, normally on hols towing, long run auto cruise on never above 60 etc

Think "sport" means a quicker shift between gears, but doubt it works. Dont think I can afford to run on 22mpg.....jeez.

Thought the ECU upgrade would sort out marginally the mpg %. Far better to drive mind.

Do you think the redex works at all then? I was told never to add these additives to diesel engines (even though thats what they are produced for) by a specialist peugeot dealer.

Sport mode doesn't make it go any better, thats not what its for. All it does is hold it in a lower gear for longer so it changes up at higher RPM, you'll notice it more when climbing a long, steep hill. In normal mode, it'll change up and you loose power as the engine comes off boost and you'll have to keep kicking down to get the power back up. In sport mode, it'll keep the engine at a higher RPM and so keep the turbo wound up and on boost.

Hi WB,

22-23 is about what you can expect on average. Maybe 25+ on a run.

I recently got a TD5Alive remap on my 2003 TD5 Auto, made no end of difference to the driving experience and increased the MPG by 1-2 mpg overall. Would have thought your JE upgrade should have done the same.

Like many say, the Auto is quite a few mpg's down on a Manual but I just think the driving of the Auto is so much more relaxed it's worth the extra cost at the pumps.

I've had both Manual and Auto Disco's in the past and wouldn't change back. (probably started a debate on this now :( )

Maybe try using a few more revs to get it to 50 and into top that little bit sooner, you never know that may actually help in the long run but basically you'll never want to be too far from a Petrol station.
