why does he show the odometer and state it is 80miles but then says 'The engine ia a 43,000 mile Td5 unit'.

Fair play to him, it looks a nice landy, but 'as new' come on, you can see all the rusty parts bolted back on the chassis.

Also, I didn't think you could change the engine for the us market.

You can reasonably expect that though as most used Landies do, but he's advertising this as a brand new, ground up meticulous rebuild.
With that in mind, I wouldn't expect to see anything at all in need of replacement, and given what I pointed out a few posts ago, what state is the rest of the underside in?
His definition of 'brand new' (or as new) and 'meticulous' seems to vastly differ from mine... Shame, as it really is a stunning vehicle from what we can mostly see.

Not really, because as long you have an agreed valuation which proves it would cost you say 10k to replace or build a vehicle to the same high standard in the event of a total loss, then that's what they would pay out.

I've got an agreed valuation on mine, as the difference between book price and cost of build is significantly different. Normally costs around £15 to get it set up. :)
 
Ok, I've just spoke to the guy to see what he wants for it, as I was seriously considering buying it.
Bear mind it isn't just the engine that's done 43k, it's also the gearbox, transfer box, axles and running gear.

Go on, take a guess. How much...

My brother is looking to move to the US and take his S11 with him and has therefore been looking into importing them. You cannot import a Defender that is younger than 25 years (rolling annually) and it must be a vehicle built to that specification, they used to be rather lax but are getting very hot on them now, as a TD5 it would NOT be allowed to be imported.

According to most of the specialists that assist in exporting there at the moment only pre 200tdi Defenders are allowed in.

For that very reason he has scrapped his 200tdi plans for the S11 and is leaving the 2.25 in.
 
I bought a 90 (the one in my pic infact) from him, it was an absolute ROT box. I bought it with rose-tinted glasses and it was my first Land Rover. paid £3k for it - sold it for £600 about a year later. I didn't know anything about them then, and while it was a baptism of fire - it was a massive expensive I could have done without. If I saw him now, I'd tie his nuts to the towbar on my P38 and set off on a VERY long trip.
 
I feel more of a fool for believing he was an honest bloke just bought the discovery never had anything like it before asked what it was like underneath over the phone etc went to have a look and it was absolutey throwing it down and i am just getting about on a stick for a few weeks so had a quick look under it with a torch no signs of rust.
day after got under it and poked ten big holes in it with my thumb just rust waxoyled over the top after reading this forum i'm sure there is more to come
The chassis however is as described so it might be worth keeping.
