Hi all; well after approx 2 days of owning my shiny lovely P38, he decided to remind me he's a P38 and come up with an EAS fault. Now identified as an EAS valve fault, the mechanic wants to change the whole valve block. QUESTION: Can I just change one valve?

First thing you need to establish is the diagnostics used to find the fault and what the recorded fault actually is. Valve faults are very rare. Only dedicated diagnostics will give a correct fault reading. Even then it may not be your problem but an indicator to another cause. Does your mechanic have experience of the system? Some don't and their only method is to change things until they find the cause. This can cost a fortune.

Thanks Wammers, I took it to my usual mechanic who knows Landies mechanically and drives a L322, this was beyond him so he took it to his friend who apparently is a bit of a P38 'guru'...and has 'the official kit for reading it'... and he's gone straight for changing the whole valve block...

That certainly replaces most of the moving parts in one fell swoop. I guess if you're paying by the minute it might even be cost effective if you get the valve block at the right price.

Brilliant, thanks guys, knew you'd come through nice and early...now all I have to do is convince 2 mechanics to listen...I was introduced to the first mechanic by a mutual friend, an orchardsman. The saying goes, I do Landrovers, you do apples, and you do dogs... (I'm a teacher and dog trainer).

P38 Spares, OEM valve block £975?????????????????????????????? I don't think so!!

I think it maybe advisable to find someone who knows what they are doing to look at it. Unless you can describe things in detail it is not possible to help you.

That is what I have done, apparently. If I could describe things (what things? All I know is what the mechanics tell me) in more detail I'd be a mechanic. I asked can he change one valve instead of the whole block - question more than answered. No need to be grumpy.

Not being grumpy just realistic. Would be happy to help if you can describe the problem. Is it not rising, is it dropping a corner? You know stuff like that. If you can't it's not possible, as my crystal ball is away for cleaning.

It just came up with 'EAS FAULT', the pump kept running, when Green Flag unplugged the pump the car stayed level and drove perfectly. It did try a bit of up-and-down at the front just before the pump was disconnected, and that morning while reversing out of my space did a little dance at the back but then behaved itself for 30 miles or so. I just have mechanics who, understandably I suppose, don't want to hear my suggestions gleaned from a forum :(

I maybe looking at the compressor first of all. But be aware not a lot of people know what they are doing with the EAS system. Suggesting first of all changing the valve block is an indicator to me.There are many things to check before deciding that is the problem.

Yes that was a red flag to me too, seemed too easy and expensive a way out.

Where are you based ? Might be one of us nearby that can find the real fault ?

Any mechanic that says "change whole valve block" clearly does not know P38's. My crystal ball also says dodgy connector to the valve block, especially if the car stays level.

I'm in Somerset, happy to travel a bit...

Now I'm getting worried. Apparently several thousand £s worth of diagnostic equipment, does the diagnostics for Taunton LandRover, and I haven't heard anything...I think I want my car back.

@daphnesdad Without dissing or upsetting your normal mechanic(s), follow the help and guidance from folks on here. What they don't know isn't worth knowing.
Many people have defeated their EAS demons and bugs by simply following guidance from on here. The EAS is not unfathomable it works in a very sensible way.

Hi Dan, believe me, I want to! I just have to a) prise my beloved boy out of their clutches before they do anything horrible to him, and b) defeat the exhaustion/ shakes demons of Parkinsons and stress that have taken hold these last 2 days. I have just phoned for an update and 'usual mechanic' asked if I wanted the car back for the weekend, so am hoping to be able to check the suggested connections. I presume I will need the fault message clearing once I have fixed it, if it's the connections?
I've been on this forum for many years, and am not doubting anybody.
