No I haven't checked the orange wire yet but it was ok when I put it all back together

That would be the first thing to check, when you can discount that you can look elsewhere. You have to do things in a logical order or you are chasing your tail. The Orange wire has to be earthed through the thermo switch to the negative side of the compressor motor or the ECU will not pull the compressor relay in. As the compressor runs when forced we can reasonably assume the earth is sound. Therefore it leaves the thermo switch. If Orange has continuity to black wire, that is sound. It then leaves to circuit from the ECU to the Orange wire. Black and Purple wire in compressor loom from pin 16 on ECU to pin 2 on loom plug CO873.
