i am looking to remove and refurb the eas compressor in my 1998 p38 4.0se.
ti looks pretty straight forward ,but do i have to drain the compressor first?
if so,how do i do it?
also any tips or advice on the whole operation would be appreciated.
who does the best kit?
thanks

Just disconnect the electric plug and remove the air tube-it will not empty the system as there is a non-return in the line. The compressor comes apart easily enough but be careful reassembling the piston back into the cylinder tube as it's easy to damage the seal-put it in at an angle. If you are just replacing the seal, there is a ring above the seal-you may think the seal fits into a groove-gently prise it off, working around the edge between the old seal which you are scrapping anyway. Fit the new seal (Right way up) and press the ring back on. You will need metric allen key to remove the grub screw which secures the con rod to the drive shaft. If the cylinder bore is scored or worn-replace it otherwise the new seal won't last long. Assemble dry-no oil or grease as the seals are Teflon based.

just thought i'd tag my question on the end of this thread.
Ive stripped down my compressor, removed the ring etc, no problem. just one question, the base of the cylinder, where it sits into the grove, should there be a seal there? There wasnt one when i stripped down the compressor, no sign of one at all.

Is there enough of a mechanical seal th

My advice is to not use a ball end Allen key to remove the grub screw that holds the crank to the motor shaft. They can be real tight. Go for oem parts aswell, I managed to knock out a Dutch piston seal in 6 months.

Unlike a typical compressor where the motor is mounted on the receiver/tank.

The tank is under the car and the compressor/motor is under the bonnet in the EAS box of bits.
