Thanks, the exhaust filter being the screw in filter at the front?

The drive did nothing. :doh: It raised zero in height, flashing that it was trying to go up to normal ride height all the time. After 20 mins there was a beep beep beep and an EAS Fault SLOW: 35MPH MAX message, to be expected.

Running the software again only showed that a valve had stuck and the vehicle had moved.

So, next step check the compressor, probably take it apart.
I have had mixed reviews on DIY compressor repairs, maybe a re-furbed one is a better bet..... I am happy to replace parts inside, it actually looks relatively simple.

I took the head off, the chamber where the air out pipe is screwed to seemed to be a little condensated, and a bit mucky inside. The piston ring looks fine to me, no signs of breaks etc, the cylinder is clean and score free too.
Hmmmm.
 
I cleaned it over, removed dust and checked all that seemed checkable.

The compressor is producing pressure, quite a lot by the tip of my finger's reckoning. Removing the filter I get a lot of suction into the crank case.
Starting up again, no change, it does not rise. However, I have a feeling (it is hard to hear it over the engine) that the compressor is not runnning when the engine is on.... could it be?
If I jumper 3 and 5 on relay 20 it fires into life. Can I do this with the engine on? If all is ok it should rise I would have thought?

No that is the inlet filter. Exhaust filter in at rear inside look for a 4mm pipe going into valve block it is just below that. Remove it and put your finger over port if there is any air coming from it when compressor is running diaphragm is shot. Have tested to see if any power is present at the relay activation terminals for compressor relay. Or if relay is any good?

Will check the exhaust filter tomorrow then. Cheers.
There is certainly a lot of pressure coming out of the compressor when I take the pipe off of the outlet port, so makes sense to check the other end.
I am sure the relay is ok, main reason it I managed to switch the compressor on and off via the EAS software.

OK, another update, getting closer now I hope.

I spent 2 hours or more last night reading the EAS pages on rangerovers.net and also Rave. So my understanding it improving. :)

Had a short school run this morning, 3 or 4 miles, all the time it was trying to get up to normal height. When I got home I checked the compressor and it was stone cold.

Jumpered pins 3 and 5 on relay 20 again, started it up with the door left open. Waited a few minutes (between 5 and 10) and got back in, hit the up button for normal and it instantly rose to normal. Went to high and again instant, then loading was selected and it took ages to go down, but did in the end.

No EAS errors/faults, so how come the compressor is not running unless I force it?

Remove relay 20. With engine running check there is 12volts to pin 1 on socket. If there is check earth continuity to pin 2. If there is check that pressure switch is open circuit. Check that thermal cutout is closed circuit. If you have all of the above the pump should run. If you have not got any one of them it won't.

I do not have 12 volts on pin 1 of relay 20.
But I do have continuity to earth on pin 2.
The pressure switch is open circuit between pins 7 and 9, and the thermal cut out is closed circuit as required.

It sounds like something is still telling the ECU to not run the compressor. :doh:
If I jumper relay pins 3 and 5 again it pumps back up.

Outside chance but check fuses 24, 5 amp and 44, 10 amp. These for delay timer. Also fuse 15. Fuse 30 must be good. With engine running you should have 12 volts at pin 8 on EAS ECU, that feeds pin one on relay socket. If you have 12 volts at pin 8 but no power at pin 1 you have a broken wire. Process of elimination i am afraid.

Checked all those, all ok. Fuses anyway.
I get 12v at pin 8, if I manually switch the pump on via the software, which of course in turn energises relay 20 and all is ok.

Still no errors or faults to be read.

I went for a 5 min drive to the shop at normal height but I locked the EAS with the dash button. When I pulled up I opened the door before switching the engine off. All ok. Come out 5 mins later and the car wants to raise from motorway height to normal. Sounds like an air leak? But no errors.... It got back up to normal height, so the compressor did come on, or was that air flow from the tank underneath?

I have also realised I have forgotten to check the exhaust as you said. The pipe from the compressor head outlet port goes direct into the valve block, from what I can see/have read up. So the suspicion could still be the diaphragm solenoid you mentioned I suppose. But if the tank is pressurised, would that affect it? Check tomorrow.

You cannot pressurise tank if diaphragm is totally duff. When compressor is running diaphragm solenoid valve opens and applies pressure beneath diaphragm to seal exhaust port. Air flows from compressor through 8 mm pipe through drier then back to valve block through NRV1 into tank via violet coded 6 mm pipe. When compressor stops diaphragm solenoid valve shuts and air within exhaust/inlet gallery is vented to atmosphere. Air from back of diaphragm is vented via the small 4 mm pipe into the harness. When air is demanded inlet valve opens together with corner valves to inflate airbags. Air flows from tank via violet coded pipe past NRV 2 into exhaust/inlet gallery to inflate bags. When bags are deflated exhaust valve opens together with corner valves and air flows through NRV 3 out into exhaust/inlet gallery out through 8 mm pipe in the reverse direction through drier and back into valve block to be exhausted via exhaust port. In this process any moisture in drier is blown out of exhaust port.
 
This morning it pumped up to normal ok, after lunch it did not. While I was out I stopped and manually pressurised the system by shorting 3 and 5 on relay 20 again, only for 1 or 2 mins. After that it was ok.

Bloomin weird.... must be a slight leak somewhere. Spraying on soapy water tomorrow if I find the time.

It had dropped overnight, slightly, and wanted to pump up from motorway height to standard/normal. That took 3 or 4 mins, fairly normal, so I am guessing the compressor was running. The EAS box felt warm, but then the engine had been running for 15 mins in total.

This afternoon when it had dropped to the same height, it did not get to normal height after about 10-15 mins of driving.

To me it sounds like a leak, but why the compressor only comes on intermittently is a weird one.
