It’s a series 2a (1966) previous owner converted to a 300tdi so guessing he moved the battery for lack of space. Strangely didn’t put it under the passenger seat but opted for behind the passenger seat, in the tub.

I see, bit pointless me talking about a 2a starter motor then.
In that case your live and earth cables could be anywhere and everywhere.
You need good earth on gearbox, engine, chassis, battery and body, preferably.

Think I got to the bottom of this one chaps. In the end it was a combination of a bad connection and the Earth from the isolator switch not having the minerals. Cleaned and replaced and now ‘Trig’ fires up in the mornings. Thanks for the all the help/advice. I’m now an Earth Rookie+

Next - fuses. Apparently I’ve got five of them in a quickly placed, very lidless box in the engine compartment. 4x16a, 1x35. One of the 16’s is on its way out (headlights). I’ve read that all series fuses were originally 35a!? Any reason why the previous owner would have gone for lower, besides the obvious cowardice?

maybe thats all they had
my series 2 has only 2 fuses, maybe the more modern 4 fuse version has the same load across 4 for separation purposes, so a smaller fuse can be used

interesting. Looks to me like different feeds but I’ll investigate. Picture attached. It’s obviously been running with them (barely) but I’m wondering if my headlight issues may stem from a struggling fuse.

A fuse will either work, or blow. It could have a bad connection though

Did military ones have them like that?
The indicators were optional extras for a while so I guess someone could have fitted them in an unconventional place.
One piece windscreen?

Makes sense, it’s ex MoD (until 82 I believe). Yes the one piece has drawn a few comments now. Doesn’t matter because the windscreen wipers leave a nice barrier in the middle anyway.

Give another 5 years and you should be sorted!
You will find its almost continuous maintenance, you need an agreement with it that it will let you drive it every now and again.
Seriously though they do need work but once you have cleared up what the previous owners have left you then you should be OK.

Ha! Thanks! I’m using it as a daily so our agreement is ‘just be drivable and I will keep putting the pedal lock on at night’. Really enjoying learning. I could barely change a tire, now I’ve bought overalls and they’re dirty.
