We protested in the past when fuel prices went silly, now we just suck it up and pay whatever they decide to charge

Trying to remember the difference
2* lawnmower motorbikes small fuel because of oil adding.
3* was it sports car?.
4* General cars.
5* unleaded cars.
Forces was 3* if I can get my marble moved right.

If you recall the uproar, because normal unleaded is sold as a 4 star replacement, was closer to the lower price 3 star in octane

I think Kermit is right and it was to do with the additives to reduce knock. We certainly put 2* in our mini because 4* was more expensive. 2* went in the mowers too.

when i was rallying i used 4* and super unleaded mixed which made the old Cortina run very well and Gokarts

i think 5 star was 100+, just like 'super' is 97+ depending where you buy from.5* was 105 octane and the expensive stuff for performance

still think its a scam that where most cars used to run on 4 star, we now routinely run 3 star equivalent

you can get 'tetraboost E' which put the lead back in to petrol and deals with the unstable ethanol in pump petrol and ups it to 97 RON.. maybe thats a good thing for our older motors

As I remember, only Esso Golden was 105 octane, we used it on the race bikes. Most 5* was 98 to 100 octane.5* was 105 octane and the expensive stuff for performance
when i was rallying i used 4* and super unleaded mixed which made the old Cortina run very well and Gokarts
The stars referred to the octane rating.

You are probably right there, we used to have a garage right near a Ferrari dealership that stocked a really nice high octane one but it was £2.50 a liter 20 years ago, at the time £50 for a jerry can full i does not seam so bad atm but then it was
i am sure the Ferrari garage just put some in and said they had done a tune up

I think petrol was about 30c a gallon (US) in Canada when I was a kid.i was in america when it was 96c per gallon
And everyone was always complaining about how much cheaper fuel was over the border in the States.
In those days, it was a completely open border, so anyone who was close to the border actually drove over into the States to fill up.

The cheapest I can remember was 4s 9d for a gallon, but the average was 5 bob back in the mid 'sixties.
