DVLA and fuel type change

Been hunting for information on the not exactly clear DVLA website about changing fuel type on V5.

Would having my 90 converted to run on 100% veggy oil (ok with 5 mins of diesel on start-up) - all proper kit, new second genuine tank, heat exchangers, in-line and filter heaters, all new switchgear, and dials etc, mean that I'll have to put "diesel / vegetable oil" on my V5?

Furthermore, would it now be a hybrid and get cheaper tax?

The "help" on the phoneline didn't know but thought I could get an inspection (as if) and I can't find an email help link..

What they all sez,

BUT........... If you declare you're running on Veggie oil to DVLA then HMRC will want a chat regarding the paying of road fuel duty.

It was mentioned very briefly when Top Gear converted an old Volvo to run on the stuff, so reducing the benefit. Best steer clear of ohfacial declarations.

Yes, but i think that was from pre July 2007, when the law changed - you have to call it biodiesel but it's the same thing, and you can use 2500 it legally!

I agree that biodiesel and veggie oil are basically the same thing, but as I tried to point out, the stuff from the forecourt pumps has road duty paid on it, whereas the stuff from Tesco cheapie shelf doesn't. Unless this is where the quantity limit comes in??

I'm sure there must be someone who knows the definative answer to this.

The definate answer is you can use upto 2500ltrs of vegetable oil, with out having to pay any duty on it. Main reason for this was everyone putting in a return for 25ltrs to cover themselves in case they got dipped, and the taxman spending more money administering the system than he was getting back in duty.
