Dumb iron end plate hole

Hello

I am rebuilding my dumb irons and want to ask if I need the hole in the end plate?

I guess its for somewhere to access chassis for waxoyl et al.

But it looks like a reason why they corrode so much as moisture can enter there.

Also I have removed all the rust and etched primed what do you recommend putting over it next for the inside of the chassis, red oxide primer?

Will it need a top coat then or can I just waxoyl over the primer?

The hole is the jacking point for the standard LR jack. You should have rubber stoppers to go in the end.

Yes, but above that is the box section where the bumper mounts to.
This also has a hole in it on the end plate, on mine this was all rotten on both sides I m thinking of not drilling the hole on the plate and filing the box with waxoyl before welding up.

See what you mean. Not sure it serves any particular function. My new galv chassis just has two thin slits down the front of that section, not a round hole. Ventilation possibly?

not exactly sure what you mean. but you need to fit the captive nut bracket in there for the bumper

The round hole is for the jack.
I plated over the front jacking hole as I never use them.
I have galvanised farm gate hinge bolts through the rear cross member jacking holes as additional recovery points.
If you weld the bumper nuts in place you could also plate the access slot but if the nuts rust then it means opening up the slot to gain access.
