hi all, well this is where it starts,i just persuaded the wife to let me go play for a while,(i estimate about 3-4 months)
i would like to head from dublin travelling through uk then europe leavin crete then through egypt heading down the east coast (roughly) ending down in cape town.
its very early days and i still have to get a 130(i have a p38)and get it kitted out and try get some mechanical experience behind me.

this is a long way from happening but i know there is some of you out there that have the same thoughts as i,well as i said to the wife,im going
:)(well to tell the truth i did ask more politely)
so let me know if you interested and start discussing issues and routes dates etc.

also if any members have done a similar journey then i would love to hear from you and sit and take notes from your experience.

looking forward to hearing from you

Avoid Egypt, you have to pay something like 400% of your vehicles value to get it into the country, I'm not sure if you get it back when you leave, but knowing the Egyptians as I do they will find some way of avoiding giving you your money back and find it's way in someones back pocket....

get a carnet de passage for you car before you go. When you get to egypt of the ferry from aqquba in jordan get the tourist police man to help you with all the paper work and getting the egypt number plates, pay him 25 usd and it will save you most of the hassle and get you through alot quicker than trying to do it yourself.

Cheers Adam

We live in Mozambique and are always ready to welcome travellers so feel free to keep in touch and ask any questions you may have. Be good to host your visit when you make it this far.
We have been here for a little over 2 years so know the place (and surrounding areas) pretty well now. (Me English, her Chinese so we are an international couplde in Moz)
Good luck,
G&C

Just to add...you may want to think about a detour to Swaziland and head into S Africa from there, if you have not been in this neck of the woods then I guess you really should do the tourist 'Kruger' thing.
We just got back after fun weeekend there.

Hi, we did the same route in 2005 from Cork to Cape Town. Easliy done - why don't you do it in the P38? Why not take the wife and spend 6-12 months doing the trip. I wouldn't recomend doing it in 3 months unless you have no other options or love driving and expect to have few mechanical problems. Friends of ours had their vehicle shipped to Egypt and began from there to miss out on the cold European leg (left in February to avoid 50deg in Sudan). Take into account that the cheaper vehicle you bring, the cheaper/easier it will be to get a vehicle carnet. Check my other posts to see what we drove. When are you planning to go?

still no date decided on as yet,
the wife thinks driving to tescos is a big deal so shell be minding the kids and flying out at points of the journey with the kids,
as for the p38 she has taken claim to that and has given me permission to sell her car for a trusty defender, and i would be looking at anything 10-20 years old(just broken in gently)
thanks for the response and i would like to meet up for a pint and go through your adventures.
john
