Hi all me again,

Just in last few days my DSE Manual struggled to climb a 10% hill in second. I noticed the power has dropped off considerably. The power is now completely flat.

It wont rev above 3000rpm. Had it checked at the specialist for all the usual collapsing hoses - all is fine.

Changed the air filter and fuel filter and no air in the line - all good. Hoses all inspected with no blockages and turbos fine - no smoke.

1 What else could it be?
2 Are there sensors that could be checked?
3 Would there be a warning showing it was in 'limp home mode'?

No lights on the dash (a rarity for the P38!). Stumped me and the mechanic! Running the engine without and air filter showed no change.

Cheers
Ash

Hi
I have a 2002 Vogue TD 6 - recently suffering lack of power / Torque at low speed and Rev's + lots of Black Smoke.
Have had all hoses checked for leaks - all OK. So have replaced the Turbo - still have same problem! Anyone have any ideas?:(

Had a similar problem years ago on an omega (same engine) and if memory serves me I'm sure it was the mass airflow meter, cost a bloody fortune back then.

its a 97 dse so too early for an airflow meter, has a boost gauge been hooked up to the map sensor to see what the turbo is doing and a diagnostic run just to check the live data. if it has and all comes back good try disconnecting the exhaust, i have known a few collapse and block.

Diagnostics I think will be the next step. I was trying as far as possible to check what I can in case of anything obvious before forking out.

d/c the exhaust from the turbo? what would have collapsed?

the silencers rot away inside allowing the fibre to block the pipe giving you your lack of power and eventually stopping the engine or blowing the silencer apart, the cats have been known to block aswel. undo the centre silencer and run the engine, dive under while its running and listen to the exhaust. if the cats blocked it will be making a hissing sound, if theres no weird noise take it for a run to see if its made any difference. if it has one of the other silencers is blocked.

ok thanks for the info will have a look. New stainless Catback system 6months ago so I'm hoping its not that. Will check the Cat tho.

you can pretty much count out the new stainless sections then unless it was very badly built, cats worth a check though. if it blocked or collapsed just cut it out a replace with a straight through section. interccoler pipes delaminate aswel so another thing to check.

Arron, did the MAF sensor not come in on the 97 model as I'm sure that is what was wrong with my Omega and it was a 97 although it was about 8-9 years ago so could be mistaken but it still rings a bell with me, i know on the Omega that the 96 model year did not have a MAF sensor so when did it come in on the RR.

No MAF on pre EGR engines. EGR 1998 on.

So if no MAF sensor what else that end of the plumbing can be restricting the airflow electronically?

To double check non EGR (eliminate the possibility of an engine exchange at some point) what does an EGR engine look like?

did anyone mention MAP or injector 4 failure/disconected yet? I think they could give these symptoms.

FIXED!!!!!! Boost pipe for the sensor was blocked with oil. Took it off blew compressed air through it, bit of petrol to degrease and now runs like a charm. Can't get to rev above 3000 still tho. another problem for another day I guess.

First Diesel Injection - highly recommended work shop in Croydon. Specialists in Diesel Engines. Thanks Dave.

Boost sensor pipe runs from the bottom of manifold (the one that says BMW on it) to the sensor on top of the Fuel Filter.

Pipe upgrade and detailed fix to follow soon....
How do I get pictures into the replies?
This site is in desperate need of how to guides....unless of course I havent found them!

that's the MAP sensor hose then. I wonde how it got full of oil if you don't have egr... Must come from the turbo I suppose. Mine does it too... Anyone know if this is normal?

Yeah it seems odd however it must be through the turbo. The manifold is full of hard caked on oil inside which I cleaned with carb cleaner as best I could. The pipe from the intercooler to the manifold contains all the wet oil on mine.

Just keep an eye on it I guess and keep it clean when serviced.
