ive after some help about transmission oil. I recenlty got my 1997 dse back from a full service and the week after having it i went to check all the fluid levels, all were fine but the gearbox level is about an inch over full!!!! ive immediately got the manual out and made sure i was going through the proper procedure of checking it, i was. im thinking of trying to just drain out the excess oil but wondering how? Would putting a thin tube down the dip stick tube and sucking it up this way work? Or is there an easier way? Thanks.

ok thanks ill give it a go tomorrow, is there a seperate plug then? i havent looked underneath yet but i presume there is a sump plug for the engine oil and then one for the gearbox? Or is there a seperate sump plug on the gearbox?

yes mate, its got a sump and a plug. the sump you want is the one towards the rear of the car ,i can remember if its an allen key bolt or a normal bolt, but u cant miss it. put the car right up on its air springs and you will slide underneath easley. what part of essex are you? tom.

the best way is when under the car imagine where the gear lever would be then you in the right area, plus you can follow the transmission dipstick down to the gearbox sump

Just leave it entirely alone.

There is no merit in trying to extract such a little fluid, which will do no harm, and may do quite a lot of good.

Before you try to remove some oil, ask yourself this - "what harm is being done by a little extra oil in the gearbox?"

The answer is "None".

For lots of heavy work, it is a standard policy with autos to lob in an extra pint of oil.
So why take it out?

Leave well alone is my advice.

ive drained the excess out this morning and rechecked the level with the car stone cold and it was spot on full (thanks for the help was exactly as you all said), when i went to start the car and leave on idle i rechecked it (done procedure as manual says) and there is no oil on the dipstick!! is there no not enough in there or just as the engine is running the oil is being pumped around?

with the engine at idle and you have gone through all the gears and back into park or neutral the oil level should be betwwen the marks on the dipstick, while the engine is still running,i take it the car was on a level surface when you done it. if it was then you need to put a bit back in.

hi just to let you all know i moved the car of the driveway, thought it might make a difference! and it did the drive looks level but must of been abit off! checked level a added abit more just started to show up of dipstick so added more and is on full now, (must of drained too much out!!!) thanks for all your help (even for a simple procedure! it puts my mind at rest!) Thanks again.

Drain it out !, over filling can leed to the fulid frothing and doing damage to the itnternals , its up to you and i wont get into a argument about it, thats why the "full " mark is there for

hey, please tell us what damage could be done to the "itnternals" because there's a litre of extra oil in there.

No argument mind you .... but I REALLY REALLY want to learn this fact.

the reason i was getting worried about it being overfilled and asking how to correctly drain and top the system up was i ve heard that if you have too much in then it causes the oil to foam up and build up too much pressure and the seals will blow. But im not expert its just what ive heard.

What absolute RUBBISH!!!!

Where do those fairy-stories come from?

It was a LITTLE over the mark, maybe a litre or so! It wasn't filled to the bloody brim and spewing out the filler tube! And how can the thing pressurise? Good Grief .... find out how it works before coming out with nonsense like that.

Do you understand why the fluid level rises so much after sitting with the engine off? And why the fluid drops so much when you start her up again?

And for your information the brake bands and clutch packs are intended always to be running in the transmission fluid. They depend on that fluid to survive.

Best not to spread horror stories based on things you don't understand. It just upsets people.

i get my facts from the people who work deal and repair these things on a daily basis for a living, and who have been doing so for a very long time.

yes there is more oil before an engine is started as it hasn,t been circulated but as oil gets hot it expands thats why it is stated to make sure the level is correct, thats why a lot of new auto boxes don,t have dipsticks anymore,so people can,t overfill them,a litre of oil when heated will expand roughly a quarter.
