Hi all, new to the forum with a tricky question...

My Defender 90 (2001) is suffering from an intermittent rubbing noise emanating from the front near side wheel/hub. The rubbing noise (which sounds a little like a dog barking with a dry throat) happens only at slow speed – the ‘bark’ frequency increases the faster you go until it’s inaudible around 30mph. It appears only to be a problem in cold weather, as the same thing happened last winter – only this time worse! It’s possible to provoke the noise by swerving left right, even in neutral.

The car in clean and regularly serviced; a main dealer has checked it over but couldn’t identify the source of the noise without fully stripping the hub area. They are sure it’s NOT the spigot bush.

Do any of you have an idea what might be the problem?

Its worth jacking it up and spinning the wheel both ways.... could be something simple like the metal disc shield/cover rubbing against the disc... they will contract slightly in cold weather and do get crap inside them.

Hi

Main dealer thorughly checked car over c/w test drive rolling road set up with listening gear to pin point noise but there's no obvious cause. I've now booked car in to have hub stripped...will see what shows up?

Cheers

Maybe so, but i'm off to spend the winter in the alps (again). Last time poor landy came home feeling very sorry for itself :)

I suspect not many of you lost sleep over my 'barking dog' noise, but i did finally fix the problem.

The swivel seal had allowed almost all of the oil to drain from around the ball joint...temporarly topped up with oil (pre a more permanent solution using grease) and the noise has completely gone.

Suprising I think a main dealer was unable to locate the problem, but my mate down the farm was almost straight on to it!
