Drumming noise on turning left or right

Hi all
When I turn left or right I sometimes get a drumming noise from under the car. It sounds like it's coming from the centre / rear and you can feel a vibration on the floor if you put your hand on the tunnel between the seats. Could it be the prop shaft bearings ? Or if you have any other ideas all suggestions are welcome . Thanks. Warren.

P. S. Its definitely not from the front.

That probably means its your IRD or front drive shafts !
 
Is it quite a fast vibration? If so I'd bet its your VCU / prop support bearings. If you turn hard on a roundabout it will do it, if you corner gently, it probably wont. Get under it and have a look at the rubber dampers round the bearings each side of your VCU, if its cracked and worn, then that's your problem.
 
Thanks for repies. Stripped prop shaft down today and found rear universal joint was seized in one direction. Also prop bearing rubbers are cracking slightly. Will change them all next weekend and post the results.
 
Fitted new oem prop bearings and rear UJ . If anything it's worse. Rear diff bushes all look good. Trying a good secondhand prop shaft and vcu this week. Anyone got any theory's ?
 
Fix a camcorder or similar underneath and drive slowly to see what's moving. Mounts etc...
 
Fixed go pro camera underneath, the drumming noise is the vcu and propshaft bouncing around in the propshaft bearings, but no idea why ! Happens as you are straightening up out of a turn ( sometimes).
 
Well you have shot VCU bearings or a shot VCU.

One trick is to make sure the VCU is straight in te slotted holes when you tighten up the bearing carriers

It's to do with the torsional stress put through the prop and the fact there's some movement in the vcu rubber. The vcu is fighting if you like, and the thump is some of the stress being released through the weak rubber suddenly when it builds up. Changing the vcu mounts normally fixes it. If the vcu is old then test it with the one wheel up test.
 
Just done the one wheel up test 1.2 meter lever, a fraction over 8kg, 2 minutes 35 seconds to do the 45 degrees !!!!! I guess from this we can assume the vcu is in need of replacement.

Yes. There's a chance the brakes could be rubbing on the rear which could increase the time. You can test is by turning it when taken oft anorl.

Unfortunately I can't answer that question as I wish to remain impartial due to the testing/results/work I've done.

I can confirm you can buy new GKN vcu's (I have one as I wanted to test it - this is well known on ere) and re-con sellers vary - some good some bad. Reconners have a vested interest in selling you something. At least you already know yours is likely to be the cause of yer problems so won't need to be convinced yours is duff by them. Reconners want yer old vcu or ebay it if you buy new. Reconers buy from ebay anorl as a source of vcu's to recon. New GKN are new. Recon's vary depending on the provider and are not the same as new, but most who buy them are happy with them. In general they're a slightly weaker drive through the vcu due to the fluid/amount they put in, as they have come up with their own content mix. Some like this as there's less strain on the transmission if it's weaker.
 
Just fitted recon vcu. No more noises and drives better than ever. Re did the wheel up test 1.2 meter lever just over 8 kg. 45 degrees 6 seconds. That seems quick !
