Dropping the petrol tank on a p38

Would running the tank low burn out the pump or is it just when you actually run out

My P38 has started cutting out. Its not electrical so think it may be fuel pump related.

My local dealers both say they have never sold a fuel pump for 2001 P38; suggests they dont normally fail?

Never run out of fuel but I do run it low...

You can check the pump by disconnecting the fuel pipe from filter and test flow rate per minute. Do a search on other posts here.

Its a 2001 model so doesnt have a fuel filter...

No fuel filter!!!!

Its like in 2000 LR decided that they'd fixed so many minor faults (i.e BMW told them to use Bosch electrics) that they decided for maintenance sake to introduce a few terminal design faults to compensate for the loss of revenue forced by the adoption of some basic Bavarian best practice design principles. So to get round Germanic efficiency you introduce some novel design features like 'sealed for life' transmisssions whereby you do away with the consumer c
orientated dipstick and filler neck and then on petrol models you do away with the fuel filter!! :doh::doh::doh:

OK so disconnect the fuel pipe somewhere else and test the flow rate of the pump..

I think there is a fuel filter ,but it is part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank

What I would really like to do is to test the fuel pump in situe if possible - must be a way...
