hi

finally got all my interior done

was left with a couple of faults, the ac switch didn't work, erm accidentally plugged it into the blank, put it into the correct switch now working fine

but the main problem is i started the car up without the airbag on, it has been off the car for over two weeks now whilst i was doing all the matrix and interior so now the srs light is staying on

come in doors and will plug in the hawkeye later to see what comes up

tried unplugging the yellow pre tensioners with the ign off

also turned the ignition on and off quickly

also checked the yellow lead hadnt come out under the steering wheel

hopefully the hawkeye will clear the fault

happy days, lol

wished to also thk u guys for helping me, have indeed learnt alot and feel ive got off lightly with just the srs light showing

cold beer time i think

quick tip is on the heater cables, glue the cable clips to the heater box as if u move the heater controls the cables pop out of there holders

Any work on the sea system should be done with the battery disconnected and wait for at least a cuppa tea an a ciggy before starting. Airbag amd seat belt pretensioners have pyrotechnic charges in them and are set off by a voltage pulse. You could possibly cause them to fire even with the ignition off.
At least if the tensioners go it ain't like having an airbag in ya face!

The airbag light will stay on until cleared if it registers a fault ( missing airbag)!

thks buddy, oh yes made sure i pulled the battery off before hand

couldn't believe i did that by starting the hippo up without the airbag , but still im at this stage and kicked myself for doing it

walked away from it for a while, sitting in the garden with a cold beer and a ciggy

am pleased that fingers crossed the hawkeye will clear the dtcs

was one hell of a challenge in changing the matrix, dashboard carpet etc but please its all done now

even managed to get a ridged boot cover which was a right result

just got my spots and fogs to fit,

thks again for the heads up and will be a very happy man if the hawkeye clears the fault

hopefully i haven't screwed the air bag up by leaving it off

hi

ive gone back to the hippo and rechecked all the leads once again

plugged in my hawkeye and went on the ems and cleared the faults as they were endless due to me having all the loom disconnected

did manage to clear all the dtcs in the main ems setting.

however

got into the airbag system and it kept coming up data link error, kept trying it and finally got onto clear dtcs in airbag, done this and told me to wait around 10 secs then turn the ign back on , it then came up not all dtcs have been cleared

still no joy, tried to read the ECM and dtc faults in the airbag setting but just cant get rid of the wording data link error

the srs light is still showing

is the airbag stuffed or do i need to buy another data lead first , its just over a year old and the company i bought it from has closed

hawkeye is version 5.0

havent looked to see how much airbags are

thks guys and any ideas would be appreciated plse

hi

have trolled the net and also emailed bearmach to see if they can tell me why i get the data link error on some and not on others

really worried the unit or lead may be faulty, its just over a year old and always the way

why cant things be so simple for a change , got everything done apart from this srs light

I can't help unfortunately. But keep at it, you'll get it sorted. You'll feel great then as well ! You'll have beaten the b****ds putting all these obstacles in your way :)

thks mate, i wont give up and allow it to beat me

had to walk away a few times and sat down and rethought the problem out

maybe due to the fact the air bag has been off for a few weeks its stuffed it up, but then think what about all the ones being sold on ebay

dont think its the airbag but as usual hopefully something simple

thinking of next to trace the wiring out , disconnect the battery, use a multimeter and test for continuity across the pre tensioners for starts then go from there

but will make sure the airbag is disconnected in case the small voltage from the multimeter fires it, dont want surprises

then there the spring rotary coupler

oh well tomorrow is another day

will of report back so it may help someone else

just annoyed i bought the hawkeye and it won't bloody connect, grrrrrr

thks guys

when i removed the steering wheel i left the coupler on the steering column and just disconnected the small yellow wire

when i reinstalled the steering wheel i insured the coupler was pointing upwards, slid the yellow wire through the steering wheel and plug it into the back of the airbag

dont know how to get the coupler off

been trying to no avail to get the hawkeye to work

was wondering if i disconnect the battery and wait about 30 mins then get a multimeter, put a one end on the pretensioner plug and the other end of the multimeter on the coupler terminal if i will get continuity

as i assume im just looking for a broken circuit and thats why im getting the srs light up

did read in not to put a multimeter across the terminals of the airbag as the multimeter could fire it , dont know if thats true or not

have had abit of a break today so i could step back and rethink of why the srs light wont go out

really am grateful and would be so pleased in cracking this as the car is now all complete, just this one annoying thing left

thks guys

DON'T CARRY OUT RESISTANCE CHECKS ON THE AIRBAG CIRCUITS!

The SRS light stays on until the fault code is cleared and it sounds as if you have not cleared the faults - are you selecting the right SRS system as it changed around 01/02MY

hiya

thks for confirming in what i read about not putting a multimeter across the airbag

thk christ i read it online forst and great for someone to also confirm it, otherwise that would have been a surprise

im planning on having a full day with it tomorrow, as i needed to clear my head for a day or so and then have another crack at it

going to start with the diagnostic socket to see if any pins etc have moved and then slowly go through it step by step

sad i know but been reading the haynes manual of an evening , yeh i know need to get out more, but worked out roughly how the system links in

the airbags listed on the system is

auto liv acu -4 1998-2002
Siemens sure smart 2003-2006

but like u say maybe im selecting the wrong one as mines 2002

will of course update u of the results, as i always think its nice where people to help to at least come back and say what does and doesn't work

got my spots and fogs next, all the wiring is done and sitting behind the bumper and dashboard ready to go

just am so grateful and appreciative

thks guys

Check all connectors, maybe you pulled a wire a little hard when removing them.

Did you center the squib when you put airbag/steering wheel back on? I always count how many revolutions they take to go lock to lock then put it in the middle with straight ahead wheels. That make sence?

As said earlier it's easy to break the ribbon in the squib and you might need a new one. I can't see the harm in doing a continuity test on the squib with it removed.

Removing an air bag and having it on the shelf for a while shouldn't matter. I did a similar thing to you but I drove it for a week with no airbag. It does a self check on startup and will check for faults then

hi

hope u didnt mind but put a seperate new thread as thought if someone done a search they would find this under the heading srs airbag with a solution that worked for me

well took my hippo round a mate whos got a garage and good lighting

disconnected the battery and had a cuppa while i waited 30 mins

undone the steering wheel , put a mulitmeter across the coupler lead, nothing , no continuity so unplugged the drivers and pass side pre tensioner

on the passenger side went one side of the plug then onto one side of the coupler lead, got continuity

then the other pin , nothing

pulled the wire on the plug and it came out from the terminal

it seems the wire had come away from the terminal but looked ok

cut it back and put a new terminal in the holder

now got continuity between the couple and pretensioner plug

done the same on the drivers side and was ok

retested on the coupler with both pretensioner plugs

got a meter reading on all pins

plugged everything back in

reconnected battery

srs light still showing

plugged in hawkeye, selected other airbag, it came up with half a dozen codes

cleared dtcs, then said wait 15 secs, as my heart was thumping and watching the srs light

then said turn ign off, then back on, started car, srs light still showing , then

horraaaayyyy the srs light went out

just wished to say how bloody over the moon i am, but couldnt have done it without u guys

im so chuffed and so very appreciative of all the help

feel a massive weight has gone off my shoulders and won by changing the dashboard, carpet , heater matrix, ac problem, heater cables kept coming out etc, but learnt a huge amount

thks guys
