hi all
got advisory on mot about play in the drop arm ball joint ,mot bod called it an idle arm.
its the joint at the bottom with a rubber sleeve over, is this a diy job or a lr mechanic job. i dont have a lot of patience or specialist tools. i had this replaced about 10k miles ago by an independent garage and they managed to really screw up including breaking the power steering pump ?
should i attempt this or just use me credit card.also a bit of oil on the top by steering pump but dont seem to bad
any advice please.

its not a bad job you just have to make a puller out of the old ball joint well thats what i did anyway it then it comes apart easyly, can be a real pain as well though

The arm can be a right ****er to get off the splined spigot (mine took more than 8 tonnes pulling power) and you will need a ball joint splitter (about a fiver) but if you can get the bits undone the actual replacement is about a 5 minute job!

any idea how much an independent lr garage would charge. If i'm gonna spend the best part of the day on it and buy separators and get seriously frustrated it's might be best for me to let someone else do it who has the knowledge and facilities

depends on how long it takes them if they put a new drop arm on etc mabe around £100

Oddie if Gratch's link is anything to go by it's more than a 10 mins job, even if parts are a tenner it's gonna take me all fecking day to sort unless the ball joint comes out easy, and as i said a knob head replaced this for me 10k miles ago and i dont know if he's put the ball joint in right so it might turn into an epic, thanks for all your comments. will ponder my next move overnight maybe tomorrow i will feel braver let you know

is that as easy as it sounds, it didnt look to hard in the link Gratch posted

It's only hard if the cup isn't too worn. ye need to make sure whatever ye are usin' catches the cup and it comes out square / straight.
Ah've read somewheres that ye can change it all with the drop arm in place... never tried it tho';)
