Should i be able to move the steering damper and everything attached to the top of the ball joint forwards and backwards?

Im trying to hunt down the reason for all the play in my steering.

Also anyone know off the top of their heads what size the drop arm retaining nut is?

cheers all :D

If you're changing the drop arm ball joint it maybe easier to change it without removing the drop arm as they can be very difficult to remove. I did mine a couple of months ago while on the vehicle, quite an easy job.

drop arms will allways come off with a big enough hammer and drift ,they are held on slow taper so whacking will eventually get it off ,if doing it in situ seat can be removed by making a puller out of a bolt (12mm flange bolt works well with edge ground to suit ,welding around seat will shrink it ,

Yes you should be able to rock the joint forwards and backwards rotationally, but if theres any play at all in the joint itself its had it, weeny bit is okay.
Either get a mate to rock the steering whilst you watch it to see where or if any movement is, or use a large pair of water pump pliers and squeeze the ball into the socket.
