Another problem, driveshaft cv joint gaiter fell off, and garage said that it couldn't be replaced and the only remedy was to buy new front part of driveshaft for £400. Second garage said that they could clean the joint, apply grease and fit a generic gaiter for a fraction of the cost. Which one is correct?

I had a generic gator fitted against the advice of another mechanic. They fitted it with proper metal clips and degreased the wide part of the joint. They packed the inside of the boot with grease. A proper job!

It lasted about 10 miles before i heard it flapping under the car. They just won't stay on. They didn't charge me for it. The first mechanic had tried a few times before without success. Three years (35K) later and still got a split gator! I just ask them to grease the joint up every service. One day it will get noisy and need replacing but until then I will save my money. Never been pulled up on MOT.

In my opionion get a new shaft or leave it alone.
