Drive in 200tdi conversion south west

Doing a bit of research for when my 19J engine gives up - it works ok at the mo, takes a bit to start when it’s cold but fine. So I’m looking for place I can leave the 90 and have the engine swapped for a 200TDI all in - there is a place in Norfolk but I’m in Gloucestershire! Bit far to go back if it needs anything sorting afterwards- My local garage will do it but it’s not on their priority list! Any one know of a good place?

Can think of 1 or 2 round here, but I reckon Norfolk is quicker to get to

Is Barnsley South Yorkshire too far away? Or of cause there is always Steve Parkers, of Rochdale is ok.

They are all pretty far away ! I found the Steve Parker place when searching - they sell the kits, I wish I had the enthusiasm to do it myself.. but I just wouldn’t enjoy doing it and don’t want an in bits broken Landrover going mouldy on my front lawn, for the next 10 years probably haha

10 years would be good going, I've overshot that by a couple

Steve Parkers also does the conversion.

It took my mechanic in Barnsley a month to do the whole conversion, and that was around doing other work as well. If you buy the kit, it's pretty much just a bolt on job. My mechanic fabricated everything himself. Cost me a total of £1500, and that includes buying the engine.

Bear in mind that it's not 2004 anymore- the latest 200tdi engines are now 25 years old. Before even thinking about the expense and/or effort of fitting one into your Landy, budget for a full rebuild. They're good engines (noisy though) but aren't indestructible. It made sense when there were a plethora of rusty Discos with good engines lying around, but those days are gone now.

Have you thought about just rebuilding the 19J? This will be a cheaper job than buying, overhauling and fitting a tdi and keeps the originality.

Or you could buy my 19j as a spare.

My 90 has got a 200Tdi fitted by the previous owner who wasn’t a mechanic. There’s a good guide on the Glencoyne engineering website from memory if you’ve got the opportunity to do it yourself.

I believe that it might not be significantly more cost to replace the engine for a 200tdi than to refurbish the 19j

Surely the cost of rebuilding a 200tdi and the cost of rebuilding a 19J are comparable? I know that if I was fitting a tdi converting mine again now I would want to rebuild the engine before fitting. 10 years ago when I did it the disco it came from was driven home and all it needed was a good service. Unfortunately that is not the case anymore

Yes but I wasn’t planning on rebuilding the 200tdi - (hopefully would find one that ran well) I totally get the argument that they are now getting old but I’m sure there are good runners around? as I’m not in any major hurry I can be a bit more choosy.

You’re right that there will be good runners around the place. But there are far far more pallet engine which are out of the vehicle and you just have to take the seller word. I would also unless there is a full service history still want to do some work on it, Certainly a timing kit as a minimum.

I've not rebuilt mine, runs beautifully. I'll worry about a rebuild if something goes wrong. I did timing kit, cooling system, water pump. So far so good.

UPDATE !
I have the 90 booked in for a 200tdi implant in a week - the chap at my local Garage has a defender which I can have the engine from. We went for a drive and runs/pulls well - I am no expert of course but it’s definitely more capable than what’s in it - and it starts instantly which the 19J has never done.

Equally I'd not be paying to have an old engine refurbed

So what your saying is you'd have no engine. Is that financially sensible?
