I never said it's a load test, I said he is testing the static voltage of the battery without anything being applied to it.

It's the next simplest method he can use to measure the voltage after it's been sitting overnight to see if it was holding a bit of charge.

Did you not read my posts where I kept saying he needs a load tester???

Ok so got in tonight and had a quick look at the digital battery charger. It was showing 13.2v and maintaining it at 3.12 amp I think and showing it as strong... Just been out its sat at 12.9v and not charging at all I tested the battery with the multimeter which was showing 13.1. I've now taken the charger off. What's the next step?
 
you need to stop sticking the charger on it :D

now it's charged, you need to let it get rid of the surface charge and settle. (you can put the head lights on for a couple of minutes to speed it up, as barbados said)

go and trace that blue wire, someone has done it for a reason and you need to figure out why. (maybe dual battery setup?)
 
Ok trax im glad your online, I traced the blue wire from the engine bay that seemed to be in with the yellow brown cable for my alt... it runs with another, the other goes to the battery and has a fuse on it (not been connected just goes to the tray)

then they both run to a relay behind a panel on the passenger rear.... it looks like that lights are also connected to the relay?

I can take pics if you want or if u want my number to ring me and guide me through it just pm me buddy. thanks

edit: also the battery had dropped to 12.9 on my multimeter. it still started though.
 
will go take some now. Ive been on a gas training course and smashed my phone screen but its been nice to finish early :D pics will be on in 5-10 mins tops
 
Cables that come out the tub side at the back.. taped together.

One of the cables are blue the one that runs from the alt yellow brown to the back.

Other thicker cable that goes from battery box with like an in line fuse ive just pulled apart to the back of the tub also.

err, it kinda looks like someone has used the alt dash warning light as an ignition trigger for a relay.

go have a look at the relay, look for a wire plugged into 87 (stamped next to the spade) where does it go?

if i'm right, then blue would be in 86, that green one (goes to battery box) in 30, 85 is earthed.. so probably the red is 87

i'm off for a bit. make a note of where the wires from the relay went and then disconnect the blue scotchblock from the alt dash wire and remove that blue wire and the green one from the batt compartment. rip them from the landy, and pull that relay out.

reattach the yellow/brown dash wires with solder and shrink/tape it up.

test to make sure your alt works correctly. light on with ign, off when started.

when running your battery should be 13.4ishv measured at the battery terms.
 
Found it!!!

It went down a trailer socket... thing...

Ripped it out and all the wiring...

seems the cables i thought went to the light were two wires that earthed where the lights must earth.

my brother in law is always taking the **** outa my landys and he said he probably came out the factory with wiring like that lol!!!

Just come in, got the voltmeter working, stereo works with a 12v feed from the battery to the memory wire and the ignition wire is on a switch so i can just click that on or off when i like.

been sat with the interior light on and the radio and the battery is flat again :doh:

Tried to crimp the alt wires together with a crimp/shrink wrap 2 in 1 connector, that didnt go well so ive just used a ****ty block connector until i get round to soldering it.

If i remember rightly the battery is one a mate gave me off a pick up so it might not have enough juice in it to do anything without the truck running. I never noticed a problem before because i always jump in it, drive, play, break it then come home and fix it.

Thanks a lot for your help everyone who had an input. Especially Trax! I suspect ill spend many more hours messing with the wiring at some point but for now tomorrows job is to tidy all the tools out of it, get my new tires put on and then its ready to play!! King cab conversion soon :D
 
stick your multi across the battery terminals and set it to voltage.

don't take your eyes off the numbers (if you don't have a fancy hi/low capture).

make a note of the figure with ign off.
start ignition (starter motor)
make note of the voltage it dropped to.
post them back on here
