Drag link ball joint renewal.

Had some knocking and went to investigate and found out my ball joint had given up the ghost!

Here’s how Ah did it…

First ah jacked the bus up and took off the wheel to see this…

gave it a clean with a wire brush then a good dose of GT85 and left it for a wee while to soak in…

Usin’ an 11mm socket and spanner ah took the nuts and bolts out holding the clamps and moved the clamps out of the way…

There was a couple of ‘cuts’ in the tube, so ah gave them a squirt with gt85, left it for a wee while, then stuck a screwdriver in them to prise them open a bit and gave them another squirt…

While it was soakin’ ah measured from the centre of the ball joint to the end of the tube….

( if ye don’t have a vernier thingy, then a tape measure would do or just count the threads)

next ah removed the split pin from the ball joint…

gave it a clean, more gt85 and left it for a wee bit…

then usin’ a 19mm socket ah removed the nut..

Then usin’ a ball joint splitter ah knocked the ball joint out….

( the other way to do it, if ye don’t have one of these tools, is to give the arm a few gentle chaps with a hammer to try and shock it free )

once the ball joint was free, ah stuck a piece of rubber on the tube for grip, stuck a set of pipe grips on that and jammed the handles against the panhard bracket to stop everything turning…

then using a set of molegrips ( ah don’t have stilsons!) ah started to undo the ball joint….

draglinkballjointrenewal017.jpg

then used a big ring spanner as it got easier…

draglinkballjointrenewal018.jpg

and finally me hand…

Just a photie of the old and new…

When ah came to fit the new ball joint ah used two new clamps, nuts and bolts, plenty of copper grease and made sure that that it was in line with the drop arm ball joint…

(Torque setting for the clamps is 14Nm or 10lb/ft and the ball joint nut is 41Nm or 33lb/ft.)

Throw the wheel back on and go for a drive to see if everything is ok..

That’s it, job done.
