Double clunk when accelerating.

Hi.

Having pressed the landy into daily use after selling the slitty, I am doing a fine tooth comb jobber on it in prep for the coming summer. I am new to this level of agricultural engineering, but happy to get mitts dirty and have a bash at fixing stuff.

I have kinda sorted some leaks etc, but I am lost with this clunk!!!

The clunk is double - when the clutch is released and accelerator depressed to accelerate, there is a loud clunk clunk coming from somewhere, The clunk clunk also happens if traveling and the accelerator is quickly depressed. The ideas I have had so far are:

- Rear A frame ball joint
- Fecked transmission in some way shape of form.
- UJ issue
- Propshaft issue.
- Trailing arm bush/mount

As you can probably guess, I have no idea what the likely cause is, so any pointers on what it could be would be appreciated!

The clunk is also present albeit with much less volume if I go over a pothole or rough ground, and feel like it is coming from under the seatbox.

Please help .....

Ben

I'd say A frame joint, mine went and every time I went over a bump it was like someone kicking the underneath with boots on. Easy way to check is waz the bolt off and see if it's loose

Cheers - That was my thought, that or the UJ. Did ours clonk when you accelerated (especially when crawling in traffic!)

I was a bit alarmed at the noise it makes (I normally have headphones in, but when the OH is in with me, I dont bother!!)

Thats a bit of good news - looks like a fecking tw@t of a job, but hey ho, who needs skin on ta knuckles anyway!!

Is it best to go genuine on the ball joint or are pattern parts acceptable?

It's probably a lot of things at once. I've gradually worked my way through mine and replaced the hub drive flanges, the bushes on the trailing arms and on the upper A frame, and the ball joint and it is now much less likely to clunk as I release the clutch. So maybe there's a little movement in everything. The biggest single difference made to mine was by replacing the drive flanges. Oh, and it's had new springs and shock absorbers too, but I don't think they were contributing to the clunk.

It's probably easier to fit a new ball joint and bracket assembly complete. I tried to press the ball joint out of my old one and cranked my press up to 25 tons, well into the red section of the dial, and it wouldn't shift. It put a bend in the bracket though.

Have you checked your diff oil levels and the panhard rod bushes?

Is there any play on the half shafts, and when you jack her up do the prop shafts try to turn immediately?

Is it just the free play in the gearbox being taken up?

Good to hear that apart from the ongoing stuff, she seems to be running OK :D

I got a mate in a garage to press my ball joint out, I wasn't actually there, but apparently it took a good 30+ tons and went with one hell of a bang:eek::eek::eek::eek:
