Don't you just love them....?

Having replaced my 19J with a 200tdi (which needed a new turbo and loads of other parts), I decided to remove the rear tub etc. to get good access to the chassis for painting and rustproofing. Whilst I can get to it, I'll just remove the transfer box to check the input shaft splines me thinks....to find this..... Now I have a gearbox rebuild on my hands too. There is some good news however, I think I can re-use the original wheel nuts and handbrake lever ;-)

Oh and yes, will be fitting a cross-drilled input gear in the LT230!

How many miles has your truck done ?

133k and it doesn't look like it's ever been apart. Damn shame they couldn't have got the design right in the first place.

At least I rebuilt a spare 1.2 ratio LT230 last year, so that can go on at teh same time.

That mileage is close to when mine gave up completely some years ago. Rebuilt box went in with the cross drilled gear.
.Shame is Land Rover made the same mistake fitting Puma model MT82 gearbox to transferbox and they are now suffering the same failure.

How many teeth has the gear got? check Ashcroft website as some cannot have the cross drilled gear, 26 teeth rings a bell?

If original from 19j engine truck then it should be good for a cross drilled gear but do check. If cross drill can not be fitted there is a splash system that can.

Thanks guys, will check that. Hope I can strip the box without any specialist pullers by adapting the tools that I have.

Iirc theres some vids on youttube, think some specialist tools needed, shimming involved?
