Just need a bit of reassurance as I am fairly conviced I know what is wrong.

Vehicle 300Tdi.

Yesterday, whilst returning home on the M5 just south of Bristol the old girl shuddered to a halt with no power and would barely tick over. Called out very nice man and she started fine and drove fine for 15 miles or so. Waved goodbye to very nice man. Re joined M5 and again no power though would hit 60 or so eventually. However on a slight incline no power. Limped into Segemoor, Called VNM & saved lots of fuel by being carried home!!!

My thoughts after doing a couple of searches are as follows:- I think the injection pump can suck just enough through to keep going at high revs. There is no fuel present at the bleed screw on the fuel filter casing when the engine is cranked. I can not 'prime' the system as the lever on hte pump is useless.

QED:- fuel pump F****d.

Anyone agree???????

Thanks in advance.

check fuel ines arent blocked. my 300 did the same. when i emptied the sedimenter it was full of ice. the bloody thing packed up when it was freezing cold and snowing.

Cleaned sedimenter during last service a couple of months ago. I am fairly sure that I have got the Delphi one on at the moment as the S***part one that was fitted sprang a leak after a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice; will get spanners warmed up ready for tomorrow!!

had a similar thing on a 300tdi defender a couple of years ago that would run fine for a while then lose all power and struggle to run, cleaned everything and changed lift pump etc but was still the same until I noticed a very slight weep from one of the leak off pipes from the injector, changed the pipe and it was cured

I had a similar problem in mine and it turned out the fuel filter was blocked. I undid the bleed point on the bottom of the filter and some golden treacle type liquid dripped out. Not sure what it was but changed the filter and got her running.
Might want to check that before trying the lift or diesel pump

I had a similar problem a while ago, despite a new lift pump it still wouldn't run properly for more than a few mins.

It turned out the fuel pipe running down the chassis had gone brittle and cracked, drawing air into the system.

I would change the lift pump for a new Delphi version first and see how it goes from there.

Thanks to all, changed the existing Delphi for a new Delphi; normal service is resumed. Would love to meet the commitee that designed the engine, which idiot puts injector pipes in the way of the lift pump. It makes a simple job just a little bit harder. Rant over (for now).

Boris113. Is the ironmongers shop still in the centre of Uppingham? If so I may give it a visit next time I am in the area. Like Uppingham a lot, the hotel in the centre does lovely teas (The Swan???)
