1. glow plugs
2. glow plug relay
3. engine heat temperature sensor
4. leak off pipes
5. one way stop valve
right ive done all above but still take a fair bit of turning over to start (warm or cold), the glow plug light only stays on for about 5 seconds everytime i was told thats not long enough thats why i done heat temp sensor, has anyone else got a clue please say you have this cars doing my nut in now

You could try wiring up a relay fed direct from the battery and manual control switch to operate the glowplugs, leave them on for 30 seconds and try to start it, but seeing as you say it's just as bad hot, I reckon the fault lies elswhere.
Maybe the fuel cut of solenoid in the injector pump?

oh yeah i have done the fuel cut off solinoid aswell, it has the hot start problem but ill bet that sorted when i got glow plug problem sorted

Have you checked you're getting fuel when you're cranking? Does the fuel pump work? Is the air filter clogged? Are the air inlet pipes on, sealed and not split or perished? Is there a good earth between the engine casing and chassis and chassis to battery? You say you have a new battery on, but did you check the other end of the battery connection for soundness and cleanliness? Have you changed the fuel filter? Have you got fuel in the tank? Have you bled/purged the fuel system?

You say it takes a fair bit of tuening over ... does this mean the engine turns over slowly, or takes many revolutions to fire, or both? If it's turning slowly remove glow plugs and turn it again to see if the cranking speed increases. Could be a poor starter motor.
It could be that it just needs a damn good service and a bit of TLC on the injector pump side .. try asking a specialist diesel place rather than a Landrover place ;)

ever since i had it its been like it, its a very good battery i only brought it off ebay few weeks ago its a 670cca
LUCAS 12V 643/644 HEAVY DUTY LORRY/TRUCK BATTERY on eBay (end time 17-Aug-09 16:00:10 BST)

The Range Rover Manual states a battery with a 107 amp/hour rating is required for the diesel.

When I first purchased my diesel it was slow to start hot or cold, then I changed the battery to a 1000cca spec, the difference is amazing, it now starts almost immmedatly hot or cold compared to when I purchased it.

Please note: The link above was not the supplier of the battery I fitted to my vehicle, but I may have a spare new 1000 cca battery available, if anyone require a decent battery.........

Thats a very good point, if the cranking speed is too slow starting will be difficult. Just had the same problem on my tractor, turned out to be the bearings shot in the starter motor:eek: Fitted new starter motor and it cranked twice as fast and now starts instantly:D
