Had my 2006 hippo TD4 fully serviced at Landrover last month (all filters, oil and engine breather). My question is if you put your foot down in 3rd i start to see a slight smoke from exhaust at about 3800rpm.

never owned a diesel before - is this normal?

Done 26000 miles.

thanks.

Have you had a look at the intercooler pipes for leaks?
Have a look at the one at the front of the engine bay (black rubber) which is prone to splitting because it rubs on the air intake screw underneath it. Another prone to leaking is the small U shaped one by the EGR.

Try tightening the clips if it appears that it leaking by them. Simple flat headed screw driver should do to tighten them.

Have a feel about around the pipes for leaking you will tell by black oily residue around the leak.

I used Duck tape as a temp measure to repair mine which appears to have worked.

There is some oily residue around the big rubber pipe in front of the egr at front of engine (to the right, at the top) i will look at sealing this bad boy - how would these pipes split cause smoke from exhaust?

thanks for the info - not too engine mechanically minded you see )

No one shout at me if I am completely wrong but I think that these intercooler hoses can delaminate or split which restricts airflow causing black smoke. Unburnt fuel.

Try just taking them off and inspecting them. If there is a split or delaminated buy another LR sell them for about £6-£15. If they look OK put it back and tighten it up tightly.
Check underneath the other long one. Where the air intake is screwed to the engine the screw and plastic bits either side rub the pipe which causes it to split. Have a fiddle for oily residue. That is where mine split. Duck tape helped sort it. I would pack this area because it will keep happening if not. Some people use a cut piece of hosepipe to protect it.

Have a bash at getting some injector cleaner also.

Have a look at the sticky thread EGR bypass. Could be that engine is gunked up if you have power loss also. Unplugging the blue cord from the EGR and putting a screw in the pipe to block it will help stop this.
:)

Micks right, injector cleaner & leaking intercooler hoses will cause excess smoking, but all diesels will visibly smoke under hard acceleration, it just depends how bad it is as to whether you have a problem or not.

The ecu is mapped to provide a certain amount of fuel depending on how much air is sucked in passed the MAF sensor before being compressed by the turbo where it passes through the intercooler (via intercooler pipes) & finally into the engine. There is also a sensor in the inlet manifold & the ecu also reads the accelerator pedal position & various other readings like temperature etc. before deciding how much fuel to inject into the cylinders. Unfortunately things like leaking intercooler pipes don't register with the ecu & even with less air going into the engine the ecu keeps pumping in the same amount of fuel, hence the excess smoke.

Or put simply, any air escaping which has already been measured by the Maf sensor for fueling quantity purposes results in increased smoke. :D

thanks for the very helpful replies chaps - you are a very knowledgeable bunch!!

I use millers additive in every tank of diesel so hoping the injectors are ok and not blocked - is that what you mean when you say get some injector cleaner?

Due to oil around the front big pipes i was going to take off and clean etc, if I remove the egr thing a majig wont i need a new O-ring/gasket to put it back on? if so where can i get said gasket.

many thanks for your continued and well received help everyone.

p.s this is a pic of where the oil is coming from underneath this pipe end.

engine was steam cleaned i think as was whole car before I brought it and this is only place that has oil residue now!

could this be the prob?

p.p.s whats the silver disc unit for on the back end of this pipe?

Silver disc item is the EGR valve.

The 'o' ring on the EGR valve can be reused, it generally stays safely located in the inlet manifold face when you remove the valve.

Wipe hose joints clean of oil when refitting (stops them blowing off) and tighten clips enough to prevent oil seeping through.

There will always be oil in the intake hoses as that's where the engine breather discharges crankcase fumes to be burned off. That could also be a reason why you have a little smoke, when you rev the engine hard the increased flow could be pulling through oil that has accumulated over time. It would stop after a bit of thrashing though.

I think you are talking about the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) unit. When idling small amounts of exhaust gases are allowed to enter the intake manifold and into the combustion to reduce emissions via this unit.
This can have a detrimental impact on your engine performance because these exhaust gases mixed with the oily air cause a gunge to be deposited around the EGR and manifold which clogs the engine breathing capability.

As Optimus says take a look at your EGR and sneek a peek at the sticky thread on this forum for instructions.

Where you circled on the picture remove both the clips so that you can remove the pipe. Use an allen key to remove the EGR unit, four nuts one in each corner. Have a look inside it and if it is anything like most of the peoples around here were then it should be full of gunge. Give it a clean then put it back on. There is a blue cord pipe to the side of this EGR unit. Remove this and plug it with a screw (or ball bearing) so that it stops the vacuum operating this unit.

just to keep you update I removed the manifold cover and cleaned with oven cleaner - didnt get all the gunge out but im sure it helped a little!
The EGR was choked a little with soot and grease so cleaned it out good style with some jizzer.

see pics of cleaned EGR...

Thrashed it a bit to 4000rpm a few times now and no more smoke...yippee!!
