just interested how many of you access the eas system with the obd2 socket using a serial to usb adapter? or do most connect straight to a serial port?

im getting a laptop tomorrow with serial port and 98 gonna load it up and try that see if i can get a connection that way as running out of options

i had to get an old laptop to get the serial port hardly any running xp have a serial port i have xp here along with all operating systems but this thing wont run xp its old and i was not wanting to spend a fortune trying to get a good laptop with a serial port as there few and far between as i dont know anyone with an old laptop i had to buy one!!
my mate across road has xp but no serial and already tried his with the adapter and nothing same as mine running vista its a nightmare so peed off with it all

incase it was socket which looked green in all the points i got a working one fromanother r/r and soldered all the wires to the correct corresponing ones and heatshrunk each wire tried that with the vista laptop and adapter still nothing so this seems to be my last option if this fails looks like all the wiring is maybe shot and that will be it as no money to get stuff rewired!
im praying

You might be surprised what will run XP.

The bird's parents had a real antique of a laptop and that ran XP. Not well, but it ran it.

I have a feeling that 98 might not have the right bits in it. I had to install something on ours before the software would work but I can't remember what it was now. May have been .Net framework. I'd be surprised if 98 supported that.

Did you find the EAS ECU? Hard to think what else could be wrong with it, but I assume you could have bad connections at that end as well. Be worth unplugging it and plugging it back in a few times to see if that improved anything.

I'm sure I've seen EAS ECUs on fleabay for peanuts. That might be another option if all else fails. Hopefully your new laptop will fix it though!

You'll have to come and sort mine out once you've finished yours - you'll be an expert!

well this thing has 32mb ram lol xp looks for a min 256 so i doubt it will run and i dont even think the hard drive is big enough 2g or something silly i only got it to try this maybe i have just wasted more money as per everthing i seem to do with this thing!

i feel like im having to rebuild and replace everything its so anoying soon as i do one bit something else seems to pack in before i even get it running

I use a USB to serial adaptor with the EAS software running under XP. I purchased the adaptor from Maplin, it came with a driver and worked first time. Vista is known to have problems with some USB to serial adaptors (not to mention lots of other device drivers), but I still wonder if it is a sync problem that you have.

You must have the patience of a saint with what you have had to put up with with your P38, your missus can't be over the moon with it either. I'm sure you will get there in the end, persistance overcomes all eventually.

no the missus wants rid of it she has had enough of looking at it out the window for last 2 months and us not been able to do anything we the kids etc as im out at it every day trying to do stuff

Well starting from a base of little knowledge, I reckon you have done amazingly well and also been incredibly unlucky.

Your missus ought to be proud of you I reckon

she wants me to have a car that drives and i dont really so as much as i have done with pretty much only guidance from here its still not going thats what we both sort of see
